	I My last visit to Cebu Philippines I was at a mall area and I had to pee really bad and I asked one of the guards where the bathroom was. I can still speak visaya a little but I asked where the bathroom was and he was like wut? then I said restroom and he had a confused face at me. Then I told him I had to piss cause he was still confused where I wanted to go and he was like &quot;ohh you meant CR&quot; in visaya. What does CR mean. That is where all the bathrooms were called CR or comfort room I think. Has it always been called comfort room I still remember much when I was 6 still living in the Philippines but I don&#039;t remember bathrooms being called comfort rooms/CR. I just realized I don&#039;t even know how to say bathroom in visaya looks like I gotta ask mom.
but it would have been weird asking the guy &quot;hey where are the toilets&quot; lol

	I was born in the Philippines and learned the language and moved to the United States at around 4. I&#039;m now 17 and I still understand my native language even though I forgot al lot of words and basically I end up mixing both english and visaya when talking to other filipinos in america. But when I&#039;m thinking to myself or talking to myself in my head, I am thinking in english I guess cause I basically have spoken english most of the day all these years cause of school and friends. I&#039;m asking this questions to people who know two languages and which languages are they usually thinking in.
I count in english I never learned how to count in my language but counting in my language is the same as spanish uno dos tres cuatro and I took spanish class so now i know
even with my mom when she asks me something in our language and it takes me time to come up with an answer, I&#039;ll think the answer in english and then say it in my language weird
even among other filipino adults i still think in english

	Why is it that in the northern part, they speak I think its called Tagalog and in the middle and south its a whole different language/dialect. I&#039;m Filipino but I moved here in America at a young age and now everytime I go back to visit where I was originally from, Cebu I can still kinda understand the language Visaya, but when I watch shows on the television, its so annoying cause I don&#039;t understand anything cause it&#039;s in Tagalog and I&#039;m like WTF, can&#039;t this country just speak one language/dialect. I know that the other parts of the Philippines that don&#039;t mainly speak Tagalog still learn and know it but why is it different from the different islands.
To Gerald, I never learned Tagalog cause I was lucky to move to America at a very young age. I can still speak Visaya but I like mix it with English when I speak to my mom and I have even forgotten some words due to me mixing both english and visaya so it was really hard understanding my aunts and cousins cause I didn&#039;t know some of the words l for so long. I probably would have learned Tagalog if I stayed cause I remember when I was little, they were teaching Tagalog but never got the chance to learn.

to many of the answerers, thanks, but how come having plenty of such resources still prompts the locals to incorporate it in their diets? They should be fed up (sawa na, or umay ) with such ingredients. I have a friend who worked in a fishing vessel, whenever he&#039;s on land, he avoid eating fish because he&#039;s fed up with it. He is complained that all varieties of fishes just taste like paper to him since their diets on board the ship were fishes.

<description>
	So I&#039;ve studied Mandarin Chinese at a university in San Francisco and began to pick up some Cantonese on the way. However, I now am studying in the Philippines, particularly in Davao City where the Chinese people here speak a language called Fookien. I tried to speak to them in Mandarin but most of them can only understand a little, especially the students my age (18). They can&#039;t understand Mandarin well and there is no one here that speaks Cantonese either. I don&#039;t know anything about the fukien language they speak here or it&#039;s origin and culture form where it came from. Many of the fookien speakers here are also celebrate Chinese traditions differently as compared to the ones in America with the common Cantonese and Mandarin speakers. This whole culture shock is new to me despite the fact that I&#039;ve been to the Philippines several times before and am fluent in 2 Philippine languages. It&#039;s just that I&#039;ve never known about the Chinese community here though I knew it exsisted. I do speak to the people here in Visaya and Tagalog but when it comes to the Chinese people, I speak to them in slow Mandarin even though it&#039;s hard for them to understand sometimes. This whole discovery of fukien made me curious about its cultural identity since I am part Chinese and part Filipino. Can anyone tell me all about fookien/fukien? I&#039;ve done some searching on it though all the answers that I found confused me.

<description>
	I would like to know a bit about how Filipinos subdivide each other into ethnic/linguistic groups and what mechanisms are exactly at play here.

1) For example, you hear people say things like &quot; He is a Tagalog&quot;,&quot; He is a pure Visaya&quot;. What does it refer to? Does it refer to what language the person speaks? Why the word &quot;pure&quot;?

If the designation is only linguistic , can a Tagalog &quot;become&quot; a Visaya by learning the Visayan language well? Or does one need to speak it from birth?

2) Does it have to do with birth place or bloodline? Say if one is born in a Tagalog speaking province, but later moves to Ilo-Ilo and has children there with a Tagalog spouse, and the children speak Hiligaynon, are the children now Ilonggo? Or are they still Tagalogs?

3) I have heard people say: &quot; My uncle is Spanish&quot;. I would then meet the uncle, and he did not look Spanish to me at all. Looked quite Asian, actually. So, when someone says that their relatives/ancestors are Spanish, does that mean they are actually people from Madrid and Saragosa and Seville? Were/are they political citizens of Spain or does that only refer to ethnic ancestry or language or what? Who in the Philippines is still called &quot;Spanish&quot;?
4) Is there a difference between a &quot;Filipino citizen&quot; and a &quot;Filipino&quot;? Sometimes people say &quot; He is Chinese&quot; but he does not speak Chinese and not a Chinese national. He speaks Tagalog as his native tongue. So he is a Tagalog-speaking Filipino citizen and his name is something like Atellano Lim. Why is he &quot;Chinese&quot;?

5) Are there any ethnic privileged groups belonging to which affords one an easier lifestyle?

5) Then, also, I have heard this phrase: &quot;I am not a Visaya, I am a Muslim&quot;. But &quot;Muslim&quot; indicates religion, not ethnicity or does it?
&quot; He speaks Muslim&quot; is another phrase. But you never hear - &quot; He speaks Christian&quot;.

 I was once in Davao and asked someone &quot; Are you a Muslim?&quot;, and the response was&#039; No, I am a Filipino&quot;. What&#039;s the deal here?

I would like to know the mechanics of all these designations and how they affect people&#039;s lives.

	Below is a historical message, it explains why the chinese hates us. Now i want you to translate it in Pure Filipino (Tagalog). Not Visaya but Tagalog. it&#039;s easy, so first one to do it gets 10 points...

here&#039;s the message:
===================================================
Chinese Americans, the largest Asian population group in the United States since 1990, are Americans whose ancestors or who themselves have come from China. Most of the early Chinese immigrants came directly from China. In recent decades, in addition to those from China, Hong Kong, and Taiwan, a large number of Chinese-ancestry immigrants also came from Southeast Asian and Latin American countries. The 2000 census counted nearly 2.9 million persons of Chinese ancestry in the United States.

Early Chinese Immigration and Labor

A small group of Chinese reached the Hawaiian Islands as early as 1789, about eleven years after Captain James Cook first landed there. Most of those who migrated to Hawaii in the early years came from the two Chinese southern provinces of Guangdong and Fujian. Some of them were men skilled at sugar making. Beginning in 1852, Chinese contract laborers were recruited to work on sugar plantations, joined by other laborers who paid their own way. Between 1852 and the end of the nineteenth century, about 50,000 Chinese landed in Hawaii.

Chinese immigrants arrived in California shortly before the gold rush in 1849. The vast majority of them came from Guangdong. By the time the United States enacted the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1882, about 125,000 Chinese lived in the United States; the majority of them resided on the West Coast. (About 375,000 Chinese entries had been recorded by 1882, but this figure also includes multiple entries by the same individuals.) Unlike the contract laborers who went to Hawaii, the Chinese who came to California during the gold rush were mostly independent laborers or entrepreneurs. Between 1865 and 1867 the Central Pacific Railroad Company hired more than 10,000 Chinese, many of them former miners, to build the western half of the first transcontinental railroad. The Chinese performed both unskilled and skilled tasks, but their wages were considerably lower than those of white workers. In the winter of 1867, avalanches and harsh weather claimed the lives of many Chinese workers.

After the completion of the first transcontinental railroad in 1869, thousands of Chinese found work as common laborers and farmhands in California, Washington, and Oregon. A small number of them became tenant farmers or landowners. In San Francisco and other western cities, the Chinese were especially important in the development of light manufacturing industries. They rolled cigars, sewed in garment shops, and made shoes and boots. A significant number of Chinese specialized in laundry businesses, although washing clothes was not a traditional occupation for men in China.

More than 90 percent of the early Chinese immigrants were men who did not bring their wives and children with them. This unbalanced sex ratio gave rise to prostitution. Before 1870, most female Chinese immigrants were young women who were imported to the United States and forced into prostitution. Chinese prostitutes were most visible in western cities and mining towns. In San Francisco, for example, prostitutes constituted 85 percent to 97 percent of the female Chinese population in 1860. In contrast, very few prostitutes were found in Hawaii and in the South. Prostitution declined gradually after 1870.

The transcontinental railroad facilitated the westward migration in the United States. As the western population increased, the presence of Chinese laborers aroused great antagonism among white workers. The anti-Chinese movement, led in part by Denis Kearney, president of the Workingmen&#039;S Party, was an important element in the labor union movement in California as well as in the state&#039;s politics. Gradually Chinese workers were forced to leave their jobs in manufacturing industries. In cities as well as in rural areas, Chinese were subjected to harassment and mob violence. A San Francisco mob attack in 1877 left twenty-one Chinese dead, while a massacre at Rock Springs, Wyoming, in 1885 claimed twenty-eight lives.

In spite of strong prevailing sentiment against Chinese immigration, congressional legislation to suspend Chinese immigration was prevented by the Burlingame Treaty (1868) between the United States and China, which granted citizens of both countries the privilege to change their domiciles. In 1880 the two countries renegotiated a new treaty that gave the United States the unilateral right to limit Chinese immigration. In 1882 the Chinese Exclusion Act was enacted, which suspended Chinese immigration for ten years (the law was extended twice in 1892 and 1902, and it was made permanent in 1904). The only Chinese who could legally enter under the exclusion were members of the five exempted categories: merchants, stude

Most visayas and other different dialect speaking pinoys can speak tagalog fluently but tagalog speaking pinoys can&#039;t speak other dialects.Almost 2/3 of people in the Philippines can speak up to 2 dialects or 3 even.
Aren&#039;t the tagalog speak pinoys are at disadvantage?

	Hi All, I could not find these in dictionaries or Tagalog books. It would be very helpful to all if you could translate those:

&quot; What does &#039;a&#039; have to do with &#039;b&#039;?

I have nothing to do with it.

Does not make any difference! ?
What difference does it make?

Word of honor. I give you my word. You have no word of honor.

Last time. Last time I came here, there was no store here. Sorry, I will not do it again. This is the last time.

Oh, buzz off!

You are pathetic!

You satisfied now?

Earn a degree.

Do you have proof? I have no proof.

Point with a finger

Namimitas ng kangkong -what is that? What is the root word for namimitas? Pitas? Kitas?

I hinted at it but you did not understand my hint.

The Americans are coming! The Americans are coming!

She likes to flirt with guys.

This is a serious matter!

&quot; At all&quot;. Eg: Can you understand some Visaya? I cannot understand any Visaya at all.

Where are you from originally?

Common sense

Well done! Good job
&#039;Take Time&#039; How long did it TAKE you to get there. It TOOK me 5 years to learn Tagalog. It&#039;s going to take time.
What does &quot;Bale Pala&quot; mean?
