Directv dishes don't work with FTA Free to Air Systems. Dish Network does.

First you need to pick your Equipment here:
http://www.sathookup.com/satellite_tv/store/FTA__Free_to_Air.html

Then you need to Find a local Satellite Installer here:
http://www.sathookup.com/satellite-network/free-to-air-satellite.php

As for the codes "firmware" updates, you have to do some research on the internet. Most websites charge monthly for access to their codes, and you will have to update frequently.

Sorry to say no. If you had a b*v or Dish it would work.

All depending on what you would be intrested in getting. Channel wise.
The two most commen dish's for fta are echostar 8_10(110) and eechostar 7(119). you would need of course a reciever. i would recommend a viewsat Ultra. I personally like the viewsat, good support aand fast running. You would also need a dish and one or two lnbs(depending on what you want).Any brand but star choice or Direct. Also an installer if needed. 2. Channel wise you would get basically all or most american channels. mtv, vh1, discovery etc. most of your dish net. 3. About one a month or so( its unpredictable) the satalite will get zaped( i was told for goverment perpusoses) all you would need is a reliable website. ( if viewsat i reccomend totalfta.com) Basically get the new file, unzip it , load it to a usb ( if your reciever has a usb port) and install it on your reciever. let it auto roll and your set. 4. Like i said i reccomend the viewsat , i worked in a store that sold satellite's and more. From my prospective view sat is one of the best out there. a viewsat ultra goes for about 200. More or less. Dish about 50$ and lnbs around 25.(Canadian)

hoped i helped you in a way. need anything just ask.
