<description>
	First, we need to simplify to registration and voting process. All states should allow people to register and vote on election day. We need to use technology to make it simpler. Wouldn&#039;t it be great if we could register and vote online? I know that there are security issues that would need to be addressed, but if we can file taxes online, surely we can come up with a solution that allows us to register and vote online as well?

Second, we need to educate voters about the issues and candidates. Show them how this issue affects them in their daily lives. Why should we care?

Third, we need to restore faith in the system. We need transparency so we know that the system is working. We need our representatives to respond to us. We need our representatives to actually show up and vote on the bills presented to them. We need our representatives to stop bickering along party lines and work together across party lines.

This is a complex issue, and there is no one solution to engage more people in our government. But if changes are made, even gradually, the difference will be clear.

<description>
	Many people have stopped participating because they don&#039;t believe their vote or their voice makes a difference.

They don&#039;t believe their voice is heard.

In Africa, members of a village accept the decision of the chief even if they disagree with it because in the process they know their opinion has been heard by the chief.

It&#039;s not democracy - but it makes each person feel a part of the village. They recognize the authority of the chief to make the decision - they appreciate the chance to be heard.

<description>
	The only way to get more people engaged is to bring power and responsibility to more people throughout the country. This requires a greater effort at decentralization of decision-making. Decentralization of decision-making doesn&#039;t mean no government. That represents the ABSENCE of decision-making at both the bottom and the top. Instead, it means that each citizen can connect the dots between Washington and their own life, see how the decisions in their own neighborhood are linked to their own life and the decisions in Washington are linked to their own neighborhood.

Electronic communication makes this easier than ever before. For example, we can have face-to-face participation at local levels connecting to real-time decision-making at federal levels. And it doesn&#039;t have to be a once in every two-week process. What would happen if legislation was hashed out on a regular basis by citizens? We have the potential to make America a modern-day Athens, where democracy means active participation.

	I believe that we need to appeal more to the youth. If youth knows how inportant it is to vote and get involved, either by parents getting out to vote or teachers stressing the importance of the system, then we can get them involved early on. By doing this, I believe that it will create a routine, nonetheless, in doing something important for their present and their childrens future.

<description>
	The premise of your question is faulty. We are not a democracy, therefore we have no &quot;democratic process.&quot; Rather, we are a republic. However, to get more people involved in voting for their representatives, I think the voters would like to see less catering to fringe elements. In the 90s, we had a lot of people wet their finger and stick it in the air to see which way the wind of public opinion blew. That is the way of a politician, not a statesman.

The voters will back the person that shows that America&#039;s interest are first and foremost.

<description>
	I think that we need a two-pronged approach to this crisis of disengagement: 1) Children and teenagers need to be educated in school about their civic rights and duties. It isn&#039;t enough to learn a little bit about American History and how a bill becomes a law. People need to be taught that the electorate has a responsibility be involved through voting intelligently and through other forms of action, such as town meetings, public demonstrations, petitions and public debate.
2) Reform the media. People need to really understand what&#039;s going on in the world if they are going to be involved in it. We need real news rather than sensationalized stories about murder, abductions and Anna Nicole Smith. Those types of stories may be interesting, but they don&#039;t deserve the ridiculous amount of airtime they get on the so-called news programs. How about spending more time reporting on more important things such as foreign policy, poverty, education, health care, the failing &quot;war on drugs&quot;, the environment, etc.? If more time were devoted to important issues, maybe we&#039;d see some thoughtful debate on TV rather than people shouting at each other.

<description>
	With all due respect, Senator Obama, most of our elected politicians have no desire to engage the American people in the &#039;democratic process.&#039; I&#039;m sure that you, of all people, understand that Americans have all but lost our government to the Big Money Power Mongers, who have distracted us into ignorance and complacency while stealing us BLIND.

We are faced with a severe Constitutional crisis, but most of us are too busy either trying to stay afloat or trying to have a good time, to either care or notice. Until we the people have a government that is truly safe-guarded against economic and political privilege, we have no democracy - and therefore no democratic process to engage in.

This is, I believe, the biggest threat to our country - and also to our world, because the Big Money Power Mongers respect no borders. Those with the power, privilege, influence and inequity to do so will aggressively take over the natural resources of our planet; resources which rightfully belong to all people equally. And if achieving their goals requires buying the government, they will do everything in their power to find ways of doing so. They will buy elections, and they will buy the Media. And they will convince the people that the government belongs to us, and that we are a free country and a true democracy - as they deceptively plan the next move in their COUP against us.

The &#039;conqueror&#039; mentality is alive and well in this modern age. Those who wish only to increase their own personal power don’t value democracy. Calling their hierarchal monetary system a &#039;democracy&#039; does not make it so!

The question needs to be, &#039;How do the American People regain control of our Government before it&#039;s too late, so that we CAN engage in the democratic process?&#039; How are we going to elect a President who will break the ties of OUR government to Big Money Power Mongers, in the same way that the ties of Church and State have been broken, in order to protect our government from corruption and privilege?

The American People need a HERO. We need a public servant who is willing to risk everything he/she has to give the government back to the people of this country, and to make every change necessary to guarantee that WE THE PEOPLE never lose our government to Big Money Power Mongers again!

This is not a partisan issue. Big Money Power Mongers are a force against everyone without economic privilege. As long as our government has loopholes that allow this unjust force to have a say in our government, Americans, and all living things on this planet will be under threat. I understand how it is difficult to believe the modern age could revert into yet another Dark Age, but we must be brave enough to ask ourselves some hard questions and follow through with whatever action needs to be taken in order to guarantee our future freedom and liberty. We are facing dark times. What are we going to DO about it?

We must come together in support for a President of either or any party who will tear down the economic and political privilege which has corrupted our government. I believe that you, Senator Obama, will be a President for the People, and that you will restore the government to the citizens of this country. May God bless your every step in being the HERO that we, the American people need so desperately in our darkest hour!

Light on your Path
Grace Founddog

	Quit with all of the rhetoric and get down to business. First thing you can do if elected is join the government social security system. It will maybe then give you the incentive to fix it. Most of our elected officials seem to believe that we are here to serve you, however I believe that you are here to serve me. Why do you need to have security at my expense? You should be paying for your own security right now and not using Secret Service. Why do you have your own retirement right now at my expense. Social Security not good enough. The american people do not trust poloticians right now and probably never will. What about integrity and values. You tell me how great you are but show me nothing. How much do you plan on spending on your campaign? Pretty sad when Army privates are living on food stamps. Do not tell me that you can not balance the budget when you have all these &quot;perks&quot;. This country is borrowing money from China so that you can have Secret Service. Seem like a joke to you? It does me.

	Stop lying to us! Stop telling us one thing, but actually meaning another!! Stop siding with the minority of the people. When our founders wanted us to be free from scrutiny for religion, they meant it. They wanted us to have freedom of speech and the right to bear arms, both of which have been downgraded to almost nothing.

	hey Obama, if you elected president, please read Turkish history.
Secularist Turkish people have done big meeting in different parts of Turkey. Actually, because of electoral barrage system (%10) AK Party has become majority party in the Turkish Assembly since 2002 election. that means , Turkey has 75 million population, Approximately 20 millon people voted AK Party. However, its majority has turned into tyranny in Turkey. it wants to get President election in order to control whole system. because, system is based on 3 pillar; Government( prime minister), Assembly and President. now, AK Party has controled two pillar,Assembly and Government. However, Abdullah Gul&#039;s wife is problem because of her cover head. but, they want to put cover head top of the system that is also despotism. Nevertheless, Condi Rice and Bush says &quot; we support AK Party government because of democracy. how can it be democracy if AK Partry has aim to change secular system into &quot;religious&quot; base? what is the essence of secular Turkish Republic? why Bush did not read our history?

	The American People need to know that the electoral process is credible. When the margin of victory in an election is smaller than the margin of error in the electoral process, I begin to doubt that my vote counts. We are not that homogenized as a people.

Issues that polarize the voters should be emphasized. Don&#039;t let the judges decide the next election.

<description>
	If you want to engage more people in the democratic process, you have to educate them. It starts in school, and the American educational institutions are failing our children. No child left behind is a disaster. We have children graduating high school who can&#039;t even read. Once you educate them, you have to give them candidates who they can believe in. Most people I have talked to and some more who&#039;s answers I have read have no faith in any candidate, of any party, running for election in 2008. Don&#039;t tell the people what they want to hear, and don&#039;t tow the party line. Tell people your principles, what you stand for, and be sincere and honest. The fact that most people don&#039;t trust politicians is one reason why they don&#039;t particpate in the democratic process. Why vote for someone who is going to go with the special interest vote because they contributed so much money to the candidates campaign? I think campaign finance reform and term limits for congress should be big topics. There are too many career politicians. These are only my opinions however and probably don&#039;t mean much. I answered Mitt Romney&#039;s question too. I am still very undecided on how I&#039;m going to vote. I don&#039;t see candidates in either party representing my beliefs, which are those of the average everyday American worker.

	It is thought of that the process is unfair and corrupt, and so what input one would chose to engage in might not have a benefit to oneself.
With the two-party majority systems seems that one must think either Democratic Party or Republican Party. Right-wing or left wing, Just to get a directional view of want they want rather than waht they think best.

	Before anyone gets too upset and calls me a bunch of names, and says that I don’t love my country, let me cut you off. First and foremost, I unlike the +60% of the eligible Americans in this country vote in every election regardless if it’s a primary, midterm, or general election. I have done this for years, and as a matter of fact before I became a permanent absentee voter, I drove 130 miles in a nasty storm (long commute) that left flooding and devastation in its wake, to vote in the 2000 election because I believe that its more than your right its your duty as a citizen of this republic to vote. Notice I used the word republic. That’s because I know what this country is; it’s not a true democracy it’s a representative democracy. If you don’t believe me go look it up. Most of the founding fathers were scarred to death of giving the rabble (that would be anyone who didn’t own property and was uneducated, women did have the right to vote depending on what state you lived in, NJ was the last that outlawed a women’s right to vote in 1807 although not specifically but by restricting voting only to white males) direct control of the government. Giving direct control of the government to the common person was absolutely not what the founding fathers had in mind.

While no one will come out on television and declare it, I believe that one could make the argument that we are living in, what is by definition, a fascist state. Webster’s defines fascist as ” a political philosophy, movement, or regime (as that of the Fascisti) that exalts nation and often race above the individual and that stands for a centralized autocratic government headed by a dictatorial leader, severe economic and social regimentation, and forcible suppression of opposition
2 : a tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control

While Wikipedia can sometimes be ignored for having misleading or incorrect information, on general topics the information can generally be relied upon:

Fascism is an authoritarian (I AM THE DECIDER might make you believe the president is slightly authoritarian) political ideology (generally tied to a mass movement) that considers individual and other societal interests inferior to the needs of the state, (NO MORE PRIVACY RIGHTS, NO MORE HABIUS CORPUS, GUATANOMO BAY) and seeks to forge a type of national unity (GET THEM OVER THERE BEFORE THE GET US HERE), usually based on ethnic, religious (ISLAMAFASISM VS CHRISTIANIY), cultural, or racial attributes. Various scholars attribute different characteristics to fascism, but the following elements are usually seen as its integral parts: nationalism, authoritarianism, militarism, corporatism, collectivism, totalitarianism, anti-communism, and opposition to economic and political liberalism.

Companies now control what we hear, and what we should think on a large scale. They give large donations to the major candidates, which is required to pay for the advertising time on the public airwaves (they get there money back, plus a tax deduction for making the contribution don’t you love the system!) so that they can control and polarize the debate. The corporation who control the candidates through there contributions can then pass credit card &quot;reform&quot; that protects credit card companies, energy policies that provide no substantive solutions to a growing energy need and only increases the profit margins to those companies that are doing business with companies that get oil from countries controlled by the &quot;terrorist&quot;, and environmental laws that don’t protect the environment.

Corporations didn’t stop with buying the candidates. They consolidated all the news media as well and now have competing 24 hour outlets to give you the impression that there is fair and balanced reporting, and I am not just talking about the crap that is FOX NEWS puts out. The only non biased news that I can find now is on the internet, and that is generally from the people who are at the location, and aren’t journalists. Everyone in the news media is now more concerned with generating revenue than journalism that Edward R. Murrow isn’t just spinning in his grave, he exploded a couple of years ago.

The answer to your question is simple. If you want the people to be engaged in the democratic process, then you’ll have to fix the system. That means finding a way to take it back from the corporations and truly make the people feel empowered. There has to be some reason that that this country has one of the lowest voter turnouts in all of the industrial nations. Could it be that the appearance of voter irregularities (DEBOLT, OHIO 2004, FLORIDA 2000) have been driving the voting numbers down over the past years. Do you think that this is not on purpose? We are now ruled by the minority, rather than the majority (like it was any other way, George Carlin would say that, but I am not that cynical). Since the have rigged it so that their candidates are the ones that get the air time, you have your work cut out for you, oh that&#039;s right, you are one of their candidates....

<description>
	Obama, be yourself. People are really tired of others pretending and trying too hard to be something they aren&#039;t in order to get votes however, not everyone sees through this.

When it comes to your opponent, try not to use most of the debate bashing them. That is what went wrong with Kerry and also he couldn&#039;t click with the majority because the majority viewed Kerry as an egghead and probably even arrogant even though he wasn&#039;t really. His presentation gave the impression.

You don&#039;t have anything to worry about there. Hillary has something to worry about as she comes across as another try hard politician.

When debating, no robotic voices like Al Gore. I personally think he&#039;s a great guy but when speaking to others that couldn&#039;t stand him, it was all about his voice. They didn&#039;t even bother to listen to what he was saying.

Think simplicity but you can also throw in your intelligence just don&#039;t go overboard with it or it will go over some people&#039;s heads and people will then wrongly turn it around and hate you for it as they think you are trying to make THEM personally feel stupid.

All of this is just to get your foot in the door.

Once you do that, keep at least half of your promises and I hope you will be a president that will care about the citizens and the ones who are trying to do the right thing because I am sick of seeing the ones doing the wrong thing getting rewarded. Alot of people are losing hope and thinking it&#039;s too late but it&#039;s not.

Another heads up. Voter disenfranchisement still exists. Don&#039;t know if you can do anything about that just letting you know because it goes on in my city.

<description>
	Tell them how it effects them not only personally, but their future as well.

If you want to make changes to the future - How about
keeping Churches and State mandatory separate. Making certain that Churches cannot encroach on The States through they own personal political agendas. Keeping Churches out of the political arena. If they choose to start dictating who their congregations should vote for - Take away the churches tax breaks, status and benefits. Because those churches have then made themselves political parties instead of saving souls. I for one am not interested in any Religious Organization dictating to me about what I can and cannot do by their rules, laws, and other according to their personal beliefs and emotions on issues. (A court doesn&#039;t allow personal emotions to dictate the outcome of the judges ruling in any case.) As this should be the case with religious individuals or organizations personal beliefs, and emotions on matters that concern others personal business, and decisions who do not agree with them.

Or Cracking down on employers hiring illegal immigrants. Employers hiring illegal workers should face sanctions ranging from fines to jail terms. Also - would also make employers liable for lost wages, taxes and social security and could disqualify them from competing for public contracts. Like the EU is doing?

http://news.yahoo.com/s/afp/20070516/bs_afp/euimmigrationjustice_070516190021

As well as Churches who give illegals sanctionary, landlords who rent to the illegals? And banks that are helping them own their own homes as illegals?

No more anchor babies - which is a fable still living through ignorance anyway.

Actually, and immediately enforcing the laws on the books, and having all Law Enforcement Agencies do the job?

That when court appeals go through all the steps of lower courts to the high courts for criminals, and those criminals lose - convicted or those convictions are upheld (even at the highest court) they do not get anymore appeals.

That murders, rapists, and kidnappers spend an eternity behind bars or the death penalty. Making sure if they are exhonorated - that the name, and paperwork actually is the person for whom as just been declared innocent of the crimes they were convicted of.

	It all starts in local communities. Start in local communities(council members, assemblymen, mayors, governors) to show a difference and then people will have faith in the larger part of government. Why should/would I vote for a president when everyday my block looks like crap? The city/state affects the federal.

<description>
	The most controversial answer to this would be to 1) educate people fully about the political process--you only get one government/civics course in high school and only one in college; this is our government and affects our lives but we educate our public very little regarding it. If we had a more intelligent electorate, people would naturally select candidates based on issues that affect them rather than marketing, unfocused rhetoric, and issues that don&#039;t affect their daily lives i.e. abortion, same sex marriages, or others.

2) term limits for Congressmen--that way it won&#039;t become some country club where instead of serving the people, they&#039;re serving themselves to get re-elected.

3) get rid of the electoral college for the Presidential elections--that way everybodys vote will count.

4) spending caps on these campaigns

<description>
	Our leaders need to make a radical departure from business as usual. Politicians can engage us in the democratic process:

By showing us that our two party system can actually address and resolve the issues that effect us.

By having leaders on both sides of the aisle spend less time mudslinging and more time finding a middle ground.

By showing middle America we count, and that our politicians care about people who work hard but cannot afford health insurance, buy a house, or save for retirement.

By demonstrating that politicians can be ethical rather than corrupt.

By dumping the trickle down economic practice and tax rebates of $100 (as if this made much difference) .

By embracing diversity without trampling over our American cultural values.

By developing foreign policies that do not inflame the rest of the world&#039;s hatred.

By finding a way to inform and appeal to the masses of people who vote for a candidate because of one single issue or a strong affiliation with either of the two parties.

By allowing us to experience a presidency where changes were not stymied by partisan fighting or special interests groups or lobbies.

By demonstrating the ability to face and speak to the tough issues we face today.

A last thought. I have voted for republican and democratic presidential candidates and have been disappointed in most. The only president that I continue to admire, despite poor &quot;ratings&quot; as a president, is
Jimmy Carter. Although I sat in gas lines, drove slower than I had in years, turned off my Christmas lights, and watched the hostage crisis in a 68 degree apartment, I continued to believe this was a president who had morals and an honest idealism lacking in others before and after him. I admired he and Roslyn&#039;s rejection of pomp and circumstance and his humble attitude. The way Mr. Carter and his wife have lived their life since leaving the White House makes me proud to be an American who cast my vote for him. His legacy as a president may not be well regarded, but his legacy as a human who sought to improve the world will be more important.

	Something to interest people. I think I remember there was a drawing for 1,000,000 dollars in Arizona for anyone who voted could win. It doesn&#039;t have to be something like that, but it needs to be something that gets people to the booths. Most people think that their vote doesn&#039;t make a difference (we all know that people think that). What if everybody thought that? Maybe something like door prizes at voting booths. As a country like America, we shouldn&#039;t have to do stuff to encourage people to voted, but unfortunately, we can&#039;t change that.

<description>
	Pass a law, not just vote on a law, that severely limits, restricts, and imposes heavy fines for lobbying Congress that advocates corporations desires over the common person. And curtails the revolving door between government and the private sector. This will increase the average person&#039;s respect for our government and one may finally begin to believe that individuals matter more than money.

Secondly, money must be eliminated from all election campaigns. Free air time for campaign use must be given to all viable candidates during the last sixty days prior to voting day. Term limits must be set at less than twenty years, government service is not a career for life. Eliminate during presidential election years all primaries on different days. The primary for each party must be on the same day for every state just as the national general election. Finally, there must be more than two viable parties. There must be three to five competing for everyones votes, not just picking the corporations pockets and ignoring individuals.

If we had an all-inclusive governmental system we would have more people engaged in the democratic process now. The exclusivity of the US government should be the first wall to tumble.
We should encourage our youth to become lobbyists. To lobby for the rights of the future generations. Teach them to form their own political parties which treasure the ideals they hold true to thir hearts. Encourage ACTIVISM AT A YOUNG AGE. Is there an age that is too young to be out recycling? Is there such thing as too young to be out selling baked goods or raffle tickets to raise money for gifts for the less fortunate kids during the holidays?
We need to take back our government and give it to the people to make of it what THEY need it to be.

<description>
	Education, specifically truth in education. The history of this great country has been misrepresented for years.
Political agendas and religious points of view have clouded the very ideals that this country was created.
When the Legislative Branch of this government passed the Patriot Act and allowed the Executive to take more power than was ever intended by our founding fathers, the greatest injustice was done to the very foundations of America.
If the students over the years had truly learned the truths of how this country was started and why they honor our flag, and the ideals that are behind our most precious documents, they would never allow this President to commit the affronts on our liberties.
I want to see a President that restores the values that this country was founded on. Honesty, Dignity, and a Faith in all Humans regardless of race or creed.

	In this age of 24 hour news channels and political programming, the people who will be involved, already are. If &quot;Joe Oblivious&quot; wants to watch Jackass the Movie instead of flipping over to a more thought provoking program that he might actually learn something from, there&#039;s not much you can do. My suggestion would be to use their interests to appeal to them. Initiate a get out and vote campaign that will focus on these narrow minded people by saturating their media outlets with relevant political information. Inform the uninformed by getting in front of them. If you want people to listen to what you have to say you have to catch them while they are actually paying attention. If you have to buy advertising time on Comedy channel, MTV or place advertisements in Mad magazine, then do it. The uninvolved are not stupid, get their attention by speaking in THEIR venue. This was a good place to start!

	The most simple thing we can do to be a part of the process seems to have the least impact. Voting, though important seems so ineffective, even on the local level. I think people would be more encouraged to participate in political jobs if we felt that it was not one big pork barrel-fest.

	I think all people standing for government should be required to not say things like &quot;We will cut taxes&quot; or &quot;we will spend more money on ... &quot; without stating where the equivalent cuts in expenditure or the increase in taxes (respectively) will be.
I don&#039;t believe in these &quot;binding referendums&quot; because it is so easy to put up a question which is ambiguous or stupid.
I also think things like the integrity and independence of the electoral system, like the integrity and independence of the justice system, is very important.

<description>
	The reason only about 30% or so of people vote in this country is that no one represents the silent majority. Objective, reasonable, well-informed citizens who do not subscribe to idealogy but rather to good ideas no matter their origins. Results are more important than political philosophy.

Call them what you will: moderate, centrist, independents. When ignored, they all go by the same name: apathetic.

Politicians are all about scoring points with the fringe groups that are the &quot;base&quot; of the two parties as they are, frankly, the only ones who vote. That, and politicians are overly concerned with fund raising from the wealthiest of these far left and far right individuals, corporations, lobbies, unions and other organizations. When you raise $25 million for campaign ads...well, let&#039;s just say they expect to get their money&#039;s worth when you win. Politicians were meant to be servants of the people. Instead, they became slaves of fringe idealogies because that&#039;s where the money and the votes come from.

There are no red states or blue states; just millions of people who have no one worthy of their vote. Our apathy is our silent protest against a system that consistently fails us every two years.

If you want to engage the silent majority, then the parties must stop with the red v. blue, the pointing of fingers, the incessant &quot;gottcha politics,&quot; the spouting of nothing but rhetorical talking points, the pandering to fringe groups for money and votes, and they need to stop pretending there are only two sides: with the party line and wrong.

Stop doing what&#039;s best for red or for blue, and start doing what&#039;s best for the red, white, and blue. This, and only this, will bring the silent majority &quot;out of the shadows,&quot; if I may steal a political talking point.

<description>
	I think the real reason people are not involved is because that they do not feel that they can do anything to change the outcome of this election or that bill. Which is a bad view point to have.

We need to re-educate people in the democratic process and prove to them that their vote counts.

Also, some people do not vote because they feel that they do not like the either of the Democratic or Republican candidates so they do not vote at all, which is also a bad thing to do. Personally, I believe we need to expand from the 2 party system. Something like 4-6 party system would give the people more candidates to chose from and not make the race for presidency look like a 2 horse race.

	By making the democratic process a part of school curriculums, beginning in kindergarten. Democracy is the bedrock and founding idea behind our nation, but its processes are often not seen by our children. History classes do not do enough. Our young children and teens are very well aware of capitalism and how it works, but democracy and its processes (and how they can be involved on a local level) is something that most are sadly unaware of.

Making school field trips to City Hall and County Commissioners meetings would be one small step in the right direction. Having local officials visit middle and high schools and talk to them about local issues and what they can do to become involved would be fantastic.

Having businesses on opposite sides of a local issue (for example, zoning) come and debate their positions for high schoolers and then asking the students for feedback might get some interested as well.

<description>
	We will only be engaged if we feel that our efforts will make a difference.

When our legislative and executive branches of government start listening to what the voters say, instead of lobbyists, special interest groups, and those with very large checkbooks, people would feel as if their opinions mattered. Our elected officials need to remember who gave them their power. They need to remember that this is a democratic republic, not an oligarchy.

In addition, the government needs to find a way to regain the trust of the people. Most Americans believe that the government is too corrupt to bother becoming politically engaged. Legislators, the president and the administration, judges, and attorneys need to find integrity and become honest, moral citizens. Regardless of political affiliation, a promise is still a promise.

May I suggest a couple of things you can personally do to help the lack of political activity in America (and perhaps make you a more viable candidate).

1- If you haven&#039;t already, you need to resign from the Senate. I find it appalling that presidential hopefuls are using their positions as members of Congress and state administrations to win votes. The fact that you are still in the Senate gives the signal that you are trying to create legislation to win votes, instead of doing what is best for those who put you in office. This fact is not helping your image and should be turning away voters.

2- You need to tell America your honest opinion, instead of trying to save votes from those who might not agree with what you believe. Since there are more independents than there are democrats or republicans, being more conservative in traditionally republican states (or being more liberal in democratic states) may not help you the way it would have in earlier elections. Plus, Americans are sick of candidates who flip to win votes. People may vote for you, despite the fact that they may disagree with you on certain issues, simply because they know they can trust you.

3- Whenever possible, be more specific on your opinions. We all agree that our borders need to be secure (and so does every other presidential candidate). We want to know how you are planning to make them secure. By being more specific, you are setting yourself apart.

<description>
	If everything in life were easy, convenient and immediately rewarding, there would be no problems to overcome and we would all lead a fairytale existence. But, many things in life are neither easy, nor convenient, nor immediately rewarding. And, most of those uneasy, inconvenient and thankless things are among the most important duties we have to perform. Participating in the democratic process is one such duty.

If there is participation gulf between the people of this country and the democratic process, the bridge to cross that gulf must be built from both sides. People need to stop expecting it to be easy to inform themselves about the issues and candidates involved in the process. Instead they need to start taking the time to find and help further candidates and causes with real, honest values and strength of character. They need to stop embracing convenient answers to complex problems that can be so convincingly expressed in sound bites. Instead, they need to face the sacrifices and difficult choices that must be made to find the real answers. They need to stop looking for government to immediately reward their every need. Instead, they need to look inward and find the resources necessary to carry the full load of responsibility for themselves, their families, their community and their country.

If the people will rise to fulfill this level of duty to the democratic process, then in turn, those elected and seeking election in the democratic process need to raise the level of their involvement as well. They need to stop offering easy, politically expedient rhetoric instead of telling people the hard facts about the challenges we must overcome. They need to stop making the convenient choices that will help them secure their reelection and instead make the difficult and often unpopular choices that will secure a better future for our country. They need to stop using government to immediately reward themselves and those with the deepest pockets or most votes and instead, be true statesmen/women honoring the duties and responsibilities of elected office as nobly envisioned by the Founding Fathers.

Our democratic process is not broken. We as citizens and elected leaders have for too long failed to uphold the process with the strength of character required to make it work.

<description>
	I don&#039;t know if there is any way to make more people engaged in the democtratic process, and especially if you mean people of other countries that are allowed to have self determination. One of the reasons Americans are not always appreciated is our insistence that people become &#039;democratic&#039; but if we look closely at it, it is sometimes a thinly veiled disguise for our way of making commercial inroads into another country. So we have to be careful that we&#039;re just not out there promoting America&#039;s version of free enterprise. By pushing our product too aggressively around the world, we risk alieniating people from other Western European Nations who have a more conservative approach to free enterprise.
Not to belabor this point, I feel that having lived in a developing nation, I was upset to realize that, for example, in a small village setting, small children were watching some very violent movies on their VCR. It became clear to me that other countries are not marketing out their stuff for public consumption. The worst part of this is that, we then turn around and complain if people in the third world emulate the behaviors that they see on these video movies.
We need to show a little more consideration towards other countries standards.

	We can start by being honest with the American people. I am tired of having the negative politics that has been going on recently. I want an honest person in office. I don&#039;t expect perfection-God only knows that I haven&#039;t been perfect in my life. I just want the candidates to be more on a realistic level with the common person here in America today!

<description>
	One way I can think of is to give everyone (all US citizens) an online account in a government computer service, which allows a citizen to vote or give their opinions on issues that range from local to Federal.

It would be an easy thing to give a US citizen an online account by making the process similar to voter registration, which is used to not only verify a person&#039;s citizenship but keep track of what particular district they are from.

The service can be maintained on a local government level following Federal and state guidelines of voter registration that are updated for such a service.

The service would present a web page to a user that call in to attention their local legislation, either recently enacted or up for a public vote on a certain date, and allow regional and Federal legislators to reach their constituents without clogging up their personal mail boxes.
Such a service allows for greater participation in Government and allows for better understanding of legislation while in the comfort of one&#039;s home or be part of family conversations during dinner.

<description>
	Dear Sir,
Show people what they are risking if they let business take over from government when it comes to ruling people. If the people fail to learn the importance of being involved in government then they will learn what it is to be governed by special interest and big business, if that is not the case already, and then they will suffer one of two evils, a kind of slavery or revolution, neither is preferable to voting once every four years and paying a little attention to what is going on in government. I wish you the best in your bid to rule by the principles of democracy and good governance.

Its not the President&#039;s job, I don&#039;t mean to imply that it is. But if politicians can get out and connect with people, it would make a big difference. Not just when they are campaigning either. Encourage local governments to get out and talk to people. It needs to trickle down from the top.

	Think less about answering every question with taxation and bureaucracy.

Health care, for example, is not a function of government; Just as retirement savings should never have been. I for one do not look forward to a bankrupt health care system in 25 years. Social Security is a failure, but could at least be a learning experience.

Look at how to get the government off of people&#039;s backs and stop trying to justify nationalization with fairy tales we should all know won&#039;t come true.

<description>
	Mr. Obama, let me start by saying that I am a huge fan! I am a 13-year-old girl from Hawaii

I really hope that you win 2008, and not only because of your race and because of that you are from Hawaii.

I am known as the activist of my class, so please lend me a moment to reflect on my beliefs.

I believe that:

We can achieve world peace from starting with just one country.

The war can stop. Everyone thinks that it cannot, since it has yet to be done. I say, &quot;George Bush should think of better ideas,&quot; others say&quot; well can you think of any?&quot; I hate that question, because, actually no, I cannot think of any ideas, and that is why I am not the president. He is who should be able to think of ideas.

I think that deforesting is a murder. If we need wood for trees, we should have special forests for that, and make sure that NO wild animals live there.

I believe that KFC and all the other factories and companies that terrorize and otherwise inhumanely act upon other animals (because I believe that humans are animals- we are in the kingdom animal) inhumanely should be banned.

I believe that much could be done for poverty. I believe that it should be a rule that persons who produce x-amount of income should have to use x-percent of it to either donate to a country fund, or sponsor a child from a less fortunate country.

This leads me to that I also believe that the sponsoring of less fortunate children is very good hearted, and we should find SOME way to go about using it.

I believe that celebrities need their privacy, and the paparazzi should be banned. If you are familiar with that episode where Bjork acted out in an airport, is how I might react if 50 foul, lowlife, evil, cockroaches stuck flashing lights and microphones in my face, tripping me with cords, and looking out for ONE sign of imperfection, of being a normal human.

I also believe that there should be surprise accreditation checks at schools. My school, in Niu valley actually knew when the acreditors were going to come for their check. We only passed, I believe, because the teachers TOLD selected students (the ones that sat by the door, no less) EXACTLY what to say when the state workers asked us questions. The school became miraculously cleaner that week, and the janitors actually did their jobs. In addition, for one week out of the year, the restrooms had paper towels!

I hope that you have enjoyed my suggestions and concerns, Mr. Obama, as you and I both know that there are many more I have not listed, and many more that I myself do not know of.

Thank you for your time, and please contact me at jasmynk@earthlink.net

<description>
	You must start with the youth. Show them that by voting, they are heard. Encourage them - as a political candidate, you should go to colleges, even high schools before you even announce your intentions to run and perhaps even during your tenure. Go to career days...not only in Washington DC but around the US. Go to impoverished neighbourhoods - don&#039;t only say you care, show them.
Also, presidential runs have become too expensive for the masses. People tend to see politics as a job that only the wealthy, who pay lip service to the poor and middle classes, can do.

<description>
	I think the best way to get people involved is better education. If you have people taught from a young age to value democracy and protect freedom, they will care enough about friends, family and country to particpate in their communities and then later on the grander scale of national elections.

That is what we need to do for the public at large as well. Teach them that silence helps no one and the only way to get a better government is to change it from the inside. You&#039;re never going to get better things or more good things unless you work for them.

And I think that&#039;s what you&#039;re doing, and that&#039;s why you have my vote.

<description>
	Well, I realy think that we should start by making the news networks give full stories from both sides of the situation. For example, Fox news and the Colbert Report definitely favor the republican party, they should talk from a democratic point of view for once and then people will see both opinions on a story and be able to decide for themselves what they think is right, thus making their own opinion known, not fox news&#039;s opinion, nor steven colbert&#039;s opinion. Another example is the way Lou Dobbs clearly shows that he strongly dislikes illegal immigration, I think he should have an immigrant come on his show and they can have a discussion. I dont favor any sides of these broadcasts, and i dont dislike the examples i have shown above. Actually, I love the Colbert Report and Lou Dobbs Tonight, Steven Colbert is funny, and Lou Dobbs can give the facts. That&#039;s all I have to say about that.

Make every vote count; renew faith in the democratic process; have &quot;fair&quot; campaigns; start DOING something about problems facing our nation instead of just talking about them; work towards better education; support and reward descent, honest, hard-working people; don&#039;t reward dishonesty or criminality; etc.

	Give people a personal stake by addressing issues that affect a lot of people, even if they aren&#039;t people who normally vote. It appears that candidates tend to avoid talking about issues that affect young people and minorities because we usually don&#039;t vote or because we tend to vote in large blocks. However, there is ample opportunity to address our issues!
