<description>
	I would give $500 to the organization that gives out backpacks of food at my hometown. They provide non perishable food items in a backpack to school children that do not get enough to eat over the weekend. I would use the other $500 to get small gifts and Christmas cards and get children&#039;s clubs to help me give them out at Nursing homes and Elderly in the hospital.

<description>
	Since I teach in a middle school with under privileged and under represented children, I would have trouble deciding where it would be best used (there are so many needs). I have students in their teens who cannot read, live on the streets or in homeless shelters, wear the same clothes everyday, and can&#039;t wait for their one big meal of the day...their free lunch. These are human beings who don&#039;t have a choice. They are not old enough to work to help themselves, they lack motivation to &quot;better&quot; themselves, and their lack of education will only perpetuate their circumstances. Think about it...everyone blames their parents (I also did at one time) because they are the adults. If we put things into to proper perspective, we would realize that most of these kids will not overcome their environment, but rather become a product of their environment. In other words, how can I truly, in good faith, point a finger at THESE kids one day, when they and their children end up in similar situtions?? I can&#039;t!! And likewise, I cannot blame their parents.

I doubt I could &quot;change the life&quot; of one of these children with a thousand dollars, but I could make a world of difference with some cash. I already donate my own time, money and heart (as many teachers do)...so this would be an added bonus that I could put to good use. These kids need many material/bought things: clothes, food, counseling, an education, etc... They also need things that money can&#039;t buy: role models, parents, support, understanding, love, nurturing, etc...

I appologize for straying from the question--

I would take a small group to dinner and shopping. I would take them somewhere fun. I would talk to them and show them that life has so much more to offer than they get to see in their own worlds. I would introduce them to people who overcame impossible situations. I would &quot;spoil&quot; them and make the money stretch out as far as possible. I would even pay a mom&#039;s salary for a day so she could take a day off from working 2 jobs and spend some time with her child...that is something that is invaluable. That is something every child with a loving parent wants!!

My students need to see the possibilities in the world so they do not limit themselves. They need to experience things so they can dream and achieve.

A thousand dollars won&#039;t pay for an educator&#039;s or counselor&#039;s salary. It won&#039;t buy them unlimited clothes, food or a home. It won&#039;t buy them love, nuturing or even parents. It won&#039;t buy them a better life.

It can, however, buy them special memories and open their eyes. It can buy some experience and opportunities. It can do &quot;something&quot;, which is better than what a lot of them have.

<description>
	Find that person who desperately could use a thousand dollars and I will make sure that money will be used in a good way like maybe a rent on an apartment,clothing for the children if that person is a poor single mother, food and clothing on the table for the hungry. Food and medicine for the needy.

<description>
	I would keep it in a savings account for that perfect stranger until it reached a value of $500,000 on it&#039;s own and have the account customized so that 200,000 of that 500,000 would be directly invested in stocks for that perfect stranger, and each time the value reached 500,000 again another 200,000 would go into stocks. That way the stranger would not have to worry about running out of money in the long run.

<description>
	what i would do is go and find out where the homeless are gathered. then i would ask a lot of questions and find the person that i thought needed the money and what they needed it for and take measures to fill their needs. there are a lot of people out there that are not just drug users and alcoholics. there are people that just lost their homes and jobs. they have children that are out of the system and need a lot of help.

If they can do (there own research) and in an essy, Tell the world how do we solve the problem of global warming,and how important this problem is to them.I would take the winners responses and try to get them printed in the local paper or on the local news.

<description>
	Though my experience has only been in Africa. The most necessities of a human being who already has a shelter are; clean drinking water, electric power, and road/transport infrastructure. Given that much, those are the first priorities i can put into use to improve the general life style the poor stranger.

-Water is life
-Electric power brings light, enables manufacturing of raw materials into finished products for use and sell surplus easily, makes mankind be innovative.
-Roads/transport infrastructure makes communication to the other world easy. Be it food,medicine, imports or exports.

	As I&#039;m involved in a children&#039;s movement (seth shanthi childrens movement - sri lanka) where all the members are kids aged 7 - 15 from a poor background a fraction of the above amount can be used towards giving them proper guidance &amp; training according to our aim to make them good leaders.

I&#039;m alsaw involved in the SLGGA projects committee where most of our current projects are aimed on the topic HIV/AIDS. We have a project planned for next year to rehabilitate two abused girls...taking them direct from courts before they are put into homes. We plan to look into all thier needs &amp; take care of them while providing them an oppurtunity to train &amp; finally find good jobs. We have budgetted to house them, clothe them, train them (computer knowledge, etc.) provide them with counsellors, etc.

	I intend to change more than one life of a perfect stranger, and I invest all of my time for do it on my way. I finishing my studies-painting, and I am filing my pictures with an angel energy, already, and intend this to be my future dedication. So if one would give me 1000$ for making the way my art become world recognized.As this is important factor-community to know that such an art has for the back up work with angels and energy (in a special meaning of an energy,that you can find in alternative healer&#039;s books) , fact that this pictures would really help people, so world would finally getting to acknowledge the truth.&quot;This&quot; truth contains more than one issue, and is mainly about our existence,how there really is angel&#039;s kingdom, and nature angel&#039;s kingdom.How we are able to co-operate in order to heal the world.And this healing is without hurt for anybody. I would like to teach orphan children how to be happy, how he is able to live happily, and how he isn&#039;t pure.Rather than to give him such small amount of money.Maybe by translating books of Doreen Virtue to the African languages..,and than donate books to this people.

	I would contact Al Gore and ask how many copies of &quot;An Inconvenient Truth&quot; he would send me for $1000. Then I would contact Oprah and request that she put the word out to libraries across the country that copies are available for them when they send me postage-paid mailer.

To receive the free copy they simply promise to not lend it out, but use it to host a public viewing of the film once a week until the 2008 presidential election. And to accept donations and forward them on to &#039;The Alliance for Climate Protection&#039; - http://www.allianceforclimateprotection.org/ (I&#039;m looking into how to donate, as it isn&#039;t obvious on the website)

This would be the best use of $1000 because it would change the lives of millions of perfect strangers, instead of just one. We are all in danger of losing our planet and if there is any doubt in any mind, this film will remove that doubt and get people thinking about solutions at the individual level. It will remind folks that their one voice and vote does mean something. That their small daily actions of conservation, in combination with millions of others, can literally save our world - for everyone.

<description>
	I would buy supplies for this orphanage. It is the only orphanage in Honduras that was founded especially for girls, who are more often abandoned than boys.and have fewer places taking them in Since Hurricane Mitch it has taken in both boys and girls and is more than ever in need of supplies like formula, diapers, school supplies etc.

Honduras - Tierra Santa Orphanage

About this project
Tierra Santa was officially opened in 1986 by Santiago Martinez. The Home was started in response to a need to care for children who have parents but have been abandoned by them for social, economic or personal reasons. The Home seeks to provide a sanctuary from destitution for 130 children ranging between the ages of nine months and eighteen. The Home strives to create a well balanced environment in which the children can develop into capable, independent adults and aims to develop the children&#039;s vocational skills with regard to career prospects.

About the environment
Santiago Martínez, the founder and director of the Home, has a wonderful vision for the children in the orphanage - that each one be well educated and rise up to serve their community and country. He does not believe that they should only be recipients of charity but rather should be serving members of society.

All who visit the Orphanage quickly become aware of the loving atmosphere. When the wife of the British Ambassador visited, she remarked that she had never seen such bright eyes in an orphanage. Emphasis is placed on reward for good behaviour rather than punishment for poor behaviour. Each older girl has a younger one to care for and they all participate in the daily tasks around the Home which increases their sense of being useful members of society. Creativity is considered very important, particularly dance and drama and the orphanage has its own traditional dance troupe.

The number of children ranges from 120 to 200 (following Hurricane Mitch). The children are only very rarely given for adoption, since the idea is to give them a loving home, and not promote &#039;international baby business&#039;. The children are supposed to leave the Orphanage at the age of 18, but such is their love for the Home that many of them build houses around the perimeter so they remain part of the Tierra Santa community.

The school is situated in the town of Villa de San Antonio about 45 minutes from the capital of Honduras

More Information
For more general information about the orphanage visit Based UK a UK-based Baha&#039;i NGO that supports the orphanage and interviews volunteers the Home&#039;s own website or Tierra Santa Support a US-based Christian organization that greatly supports the orphanage.

What I would do is give the person money for food and clothes and maybe help them to find a job.That&#039;s what life is all about. Helping people out in times of need.Who knows I could be homeless myself someday&amp; needing help from someone.

	If I had $1000 handed to me to change the life of a stranger, I would take the money to a random door in a random apartment complex and hand it to a grandmother who is raising her grandchildren or a single mother who is trying to manage day to day life.
I have been there, a single mom for several years.
When you are a single mom, even finding a $5 in the street feels like winning the lottery.

	I would buy $1,000 worth of groceries for a legitimately needy family. Only one family because that many groceries would last a long time opposed to $500 worth or less - so I wouldn&#039;t split it up. That way it would free up their money to pay their utilities instead of worrying about food.

<description>
	If I were given $1,000 to change the life of a perfect stranger I would use it wisely. I would take a good look at their situation and pay attention to what they really needed. For example, if I found that person this time of the year, I would see if they had children, what they might need. Engage in a conversation with that person to try to get a feel for what they need. Best of all, I volunteer on a Rescue Squad and do have the opportunity to see what people do need. Back when I had the opportunity, I use to pick 2 families in my area or the areas that I worked in. I would find what they needed, whether it was there electric paid, gas paid or warm cloths for there children and themselves. I would go shopping and on Christmas eve I would have the packages wrapped and would put them on there porches and take off before I got cought. If it was food that they needed, it would just appear on there porches. If it was the matter of a utility bill, I would submit a payment on there behalf. I am a big believer in helping people when they are down on there luck. I don&#039;t believe that you have to know a person to help them, I have been on a Rescue Squad for over 20 years and will continue to give to strangers until the good lord says its enough.

	I would break the $1000 into 10 $100 bills and I would seek out low income families. Perferably when they are shopping and trying to stretch their dollar. I would walk up to them and hand them $100 and say &quot;Have a happy holiday and never give up hope.&quot; It would make me feel really great to know that I helped not one person, but 10 families.

<description>
	There Oprah,

Season greetings whishing you and your love ones peace and prosperity. In my humble opinion, there is no known sum of money that guarantees a change in a perfect stranger, however, I know of someone that transforms lives, his name is Jesus. And even thou he can accomplish this in a split of a second he prefers to use you, me and any other person who is willing.

Bearing this in mind, if someone is been touched and offers me a $1000.00 dollars to change the life of a stranger then I would prefer a $1000.00 dollars worth of Bibles. Thereafter, I would go forth and present Jesus, he who is not only capable of changing lives but the sustainer of life. In doing so, a $1000.00 dollars would not changed one but many.

Acts 17
28 For in him we live, and move, and have our being;

God Bless.

<description>
	I would go to the local grocery store. When I saw that a person was shopping for low budget children&#039;s type foods - I would pick up the tab for the groceries and add in some goodies.

I once saw a women in my local Kroger&#039;s, she had several little children with her, she bought things like milk and cereal, some off brand canned veg tables, brand X bread, I had seen her earlier looking in the meat section but noticed that she had no meat in her cart. There were also no cookies or snack type things. Her children began asking for candy as she was checking out as all children do and she said &#039;maybe next time, we don&#039;t have enough money with us today&#039;.

I wished at the time I could have paid for her things and added treats in for her kids but I too was on a tight budget plus I was worried that if I stepped up she might think I was being too pushy, but I still would have liked to give those kids the candy.

	I would go to the local hospital and pretend to be Santa to the patients in there because alot of them won&#039;t be able to go home for Christmas. I had to spend Christmas in the hospital in 2003 because I had my daughter on Dec. 23. My husband and I received the greatest gift of all that year-our daughter but it was sad still because we couldn&#039;t go out and spend it with all of our family and friends no see all the decorations. for this year might be some of those patients&#039; last Christmas.

	I would definitely give a to an association I trusted. Most likely, it would be an association that helped those who can&#039;t afford schooling. The reason for this is that I think learning is the most important thing in life. When you have knowledge you understand things better and know why you should do things right. I think this would be a great way to help someone and at the same time help our world.

	&quot;A perfect stranger&quot; doesn&#039;t mean a person without &quot;means&quot; or income, its someone you don&#039;t know, therefore, how can you change a person&#039;s life that you don&#039;t know? &quot;change&quot; would infer to give or do something for that person to make a difference in their life. It could be food or shelter for a homeless, it could be a day at the spa for a single parent or a busy mom, it could be giving a stranger a helping hand where they need it most, where the money, $1,000 would do the most for that person. A new look to boost their self image; help pay a bill; feed the hungry; provide shelter; medicine; help the elderly....a $1,000 doesn&#039;t go far, it could be investing in something with greater rewards toward a bigger picture.

	I would give the money to a person who has been homeless for years and years. There are too many homeless people in the world, and if I could help one of them have a decent meal and a good place to sleep for a good period of time it would be well worth it. The problem with society is that we are almost &quot;afraid&quot; to help others, but I believe if I could help improve a homeless persons Emotional and Physical health it would be a moment for me and this homeless person to cherish forever.

	I would give it to a homeless person. I would put that person through a test first though. If the person really does need it, I would offer him something physical, like, let&#039;s say food or some clothing. I think that&#039;s enough to believe whether someone really needs the money or not. If they choose not to accept what I just mentioned, then I know all they really want is the money to use negatively.

	There are no easy answers to this question. It would begin with a lot of questions about the person, finding out about their needs, dreams, aspirations. And then I would give them something they wouldn&#039;t give themselves and let them enjoy the extraordinary things about life,

	I would give the money to someone who was struggling to make ends meet. Someone who has a job living paycheck to paycheck. Someone who has just enough money to buy food but not enough to keep the utilities on or to pay the rent. Someone who thinks about ending it all everyday but does not because this person has a family to feed. Someone who is constantly facing hard times financially. A perfect example would be a man or woman working in a &quot;sweat shop&quot; where they are paid less than minimum wage, work in deplorable conditions, and are afraid to speak out in fear of losing their job.

A perfect person will know best HOW TO CHANGE HIS/HER LIFE BEST, where to invest this money.

<description>
	I live in Santa Cruz, a small town in Clifornia,known for the homeless, the hungry, the overlooked people who are alive and breathing and deserve &quot;something&quot;. I&#039;ve seen A lot of them with children or who may have children. They are the deprived, inocent with their whole lives infront of them but dont stand a chance with all that goes on in the streets with the top threat being drugs. If I had $1000.00 to help someone out I deffinatly would go to the homeless shelters or, because of overcrowding, I&#039;d go straight to them(the children) on a cold, winter night, take them to a hotel, or hospital as many as possible, cloth them, clean them, feed them and shower them with anything $1000.00 would buy. I&#039;d do as much as I possibly could, even if only for a shor time, to try and let them know that the&#039;re loved and deserve everything life has to offer. Thank You,

	While walking in my town for exercise i am often struck by how poor some people are and how they are forced to live. I would choose one home where it is obvious that someone needs help. I would round up some friends and go in and fix windows, porch steps, front doors, a little paint, some food and maybe some heat. A thousand dollars can go a long long way in the right circumstances. 1000 dollars can buy an awful lot of sneakers at payless.

	i would invest the money in myself in a way that i might learn how to effectively help others. perhaps invest in some sort of training or education that would provide me the necessary tools to instill hope and faith. a facilitator of access and opportunity thereby ensuring education, for resolution of human needs whatever they might be. Wealth or poverty, black or white,resolve is key. it is what we all seek! to be a resource and facilitator of it (resolve) would be my way of paying it forward. ponder this.,,..,&quot;you don&#039;t even know what you don&#039;t know&quot;. we will know when we know. and no time before that. can you imagine that, so much to be learned so much information i am an advocate of fairness and equality, self empowerment and independence, diversity makes the world go around, it sets us apart from one other, and while that $1000 may make a hell of a difference in someone&#039;s life it could render worthless to others, Personally, the $1000 is a bandaid. providing temporary relief. invested wisely, it could provide solutions lifestyle enrichment and well being.

<description>
	As a member of the helping community I know as others have mentioned it will depends on that persons situation. Be they homeless or struggling to make ends meet one thousand dollars will be of great help to them. If we were to take this money it will go even father. But I work in Down Town Los Angeles and I would like to apply this situation to my knowledge base so I can use it to it&#039;s best advantage.
     First finding out this persons situation in this area it would likely be a combination of problems namely being substance abuse, homelessness and unemployment. See what we want to do is change this persons life not give them a good time for a little while. So we must attempt to heal rather than simply place bandages on certain situations.
     First would be the substance abuse problem nothing will be successful until this problem is taken aware of. Many times there are underlying problem causing this problem such as the above mentioned ones. So first we will make an attempt to clean this person up So I would provide them with food and lodging for a week in some reputable motel. During this week we would find out what this persons dreams and aspirations were find out about their childhood, the relationship they have had their spiritual understanding their relationship with their family.
     These things will be important in establishing a support system which will be necessary to get the most out of this thousand dollars. Secondly we get some new clothes nothing fancy just something so we can make this person feel good about themselves another part of making a change in their life. During the 72 hrs or so that this person is purging whatever toxins that may be in their system we are re-enforcing and establishing goals and directions so that this person have a vision because true change cannot take place without direction and purpose, like taking a trip without having a map or a determined destination.
     Then provide this person with transportation a monthly bus pass here in Los Angeles. Then we tie this person in with the help he will need to affect true change in their life. These will be employment specialist, substance abuse counselors, facilities that will assist in helping this person find housing all the while taking every step with person letting them know I&#039;m there with them.
     Then we work on helping them establishing healthy life skills we take one hundred dollars and open a bank account we go everyday and shop for our meals after we spend the day attending to establishing our necessary support system, by contacting the above mentioned organizations. We would then try to establish some type of spiritual support system this will help the individual understand they greater things are meant for them and maybe prevent themselves from engaging in destructive behavior.
      Lastly we find if this person is able to have contact with their family. Some may say that&#039;s not hard but in many cases like this one individuals may have as we say burned bridges and may not be welcome back with their families. That&#039;s why other support systems should be in place before we take this step. With these things in place we may have spent one thousands dollars in the direction of changing a persons life. Then I would check in on this person from time to time to let them know that is always someone there for the, this is the key letting them know they are not alone

<description>
	First, I would ask the stranger what he or she wanted and needed. Charity that doesn&#039;t respect the recipient is only half charity. Since young mothers with very young children are the new face of homelessness, the $1000 would probably be spent primarily on an inexpensive working car or repairs and groceries. The loss of transportation is usually the first step downward toward homelessness for a mother and her children. A little bit of help before she loses her stable life can save years of pain and suffering for the entire family.

<description>
	I would use the $600. to make loans to people in Africa through an organization in San Francisco. These funds are given directly to the people who apply. The merit and feasibility of their requests are weighed by local intermediaries, and their presentations are placed online. As these loans are repaid, I will consider and continue to fund other projects. The loans requested are usually for a few hundred dollars, and I understand that all have been repaid.

The remainder of the money would be used to do study, research, write, package, and submit a grant request to develop and implement a non profit education based business venture in addition to filing for non-profit status. Inner city high school youths who are under performing will be given the opportunity to run and operate businesses. Profits will be used to provide students with a stipend, placed in a college scholarship account, and to fund an arts and culture component.

<description>
	I would find individuals who want to work but are unable to work due to their cleanliness and attire. After they had convinced my in their sincerity I would put them in a hotel for 2 weeks, buy them three new outfits comparable to the employment sought &amp; qualified, tolieteries, and food. I would pick them up every morning and take them to at least 3 job interviews a day. If they obtain employment I would continue to assist them in getting to work for 6 to 8 weeks until they could obtain transportation to and from work. All I would ask in return is that they mentor someone else in 3 or 4 years if they are not financially able to do exactly what I did for them in 3 or 4 years.

<description>
	$1000 is hardly enough to impact anyone for any amount of time. It might pay rent for a month or two. If used frugally, It might pay for food for a two or three months. If used for clothes, you might outfit each member of a small family for a season.

If you give it to a hospital, who is really getting it? The cancer patient? No. You are paying off a doctor or pharmacy.

The same goes for any foundation set up to combat whatever disease you choose. You are paying off some researcher or grad student somewhere.

If you give it to some charity it becomes a drop in the bucket, and you havent answered the question properly.

Really what we are talking about here is how you are going to make yourself feel better by giving away what is considered by most people a moderately large sum of money.

I submit that your good feeling will last longer than the money you gave away, and do just about as much good.

Throwing money at a problem has had mixed success in history. Many of our modern innovations and breakthroughs have not come by being backed with a mountain of cash.

The best thing you can do to change the life of a perfect stranger is not hand them cash, or goods that you bought with cash.

Of the 37000+ answers to this question (of which I have only looked at a fraction) it seems that most of them have something to do with the homeless, or cancer patients, or some other person going through one of life&#039;s valleys. Would the actions suggested by these answers actually *change* the life of that person? Would $1000 *change* the life of any person? I contend that $1000 cannot significantly change the life of *any* person. It is true that money has an effect on people&#039;s lives, but the kind of change that is needed in our society today cannot be brought about with donated money.

Dont get me wrong, helping the destitute and ill are admirable endeavors. All of us together pitching in have done much good for millions of people. Oprah has done a lot of good for people. I am sure she has donated millions to &#039;good causes&#039;, but there are some that contend there is a better use of those monies.

Her media empire has generated thousands of jobs, which in turn support families. Those jobs provide a stabilizing element to people&#039;s lives that a simple outlay of cash cannot do. If Oprah were to liquidate everything she had and hand it out to charitable organizations, those organizations would have a few hundred million dollars to help people, fund research, etc. But then it would be gone. We need Oprah and people like her to continue to build their organizations, continue to provide jobs for families and continue to contribute to the stability to our economy.

That is lasting change.

	Use the money to teach a small skill. It might be something like buying a basic sewing machine for someone and teach them how to make and repair clothing. I once earned extra money by making simple alterations, such as hem lengths, for people who would pay small amounts. It gives you a great boost to be able to care for clothing and improve it.
