How to arrange pipes for sprinkler/bubblers for trees?

I'm setting up sprinkler/bubblers for trees. What kind of pipe connector should I use for the risers. Should I just have the riser rise directly above the pipe so the bubbler flows directly above--or should adda short (12"?) perpendicular pipe before connecting to the riser. In other words, is it a problem for the bubbler to water directly above the long pipe (maybre it causes the roots to cluster around the long pipe and that might not be good. If I am not making myself clear, then please just describe where the pipes should go to water multiple trees. Thx
