I hae excel 2003 and someone sent me a ,slsx file and it will not open properly.
Is it something different or is it just corrupted?

.slsx? i havent seen that extension.
did you mean .xlsx
the .xlsx is the excel 2007 file extension that replaced the .xls file that your excel 2003 uses.
you just need to download the compatibility pack from microsoft...its free
