Resolved Question

Show me another »

Will my baby have to have the same first, middle and last name?

In order to be considered a "junior"? For example:
We are thinking of naming him Joshua Benjamin Ainsworth Jr. after my husband. BUT my husbands middle name is different, he is Joshua Blake Ainsworth. So, would the baby not really be considered a junior if he does not have the same middle name?
I hope that made sense! Thanks for your input :)

There are no written rules for being a "junior." If you want to call him Joshua Benjamin Ainsworth Jr., than do it. No one can stop you, and it's a super adorable name. Plus, when he's older and getting his own mail, it will be a lot easier to decipher between it being for your husband and for your son (that is, if whoever sends it doesn't put Jr.)

Asker's Comment:
haha, well, it is true that it would have to be the same names if we wanted him to be a true junior, but I think who cares! We wanted to have Benjamin as the middle name after my husbands brother who has served over in Iraq.

Legally, the Junior suffix is attached to an IDENTICAL name.

However, you're still going to run into many of the same problems.

Their mail (even with middle initial) will always be mixed up.
Their credit ratings will probably get meshed which can cause major financial grief.
You'll really need to call one of them Joshua and the other one Josh so when you call out, they don't get confused about who you want.

I say go with the identical names so you can use the Jr suffix. At least it will give you one point of difference for their credit identities.

A better choice would be to reverse the names: Benjamin Joshua Ainsworth is soooooooooo cute!

A son is only technically a Junior if all 3 names match. However, my husband's middle initial is A and his father's is E but many people just automatically assume my husband is a junior. It is extremely confusing. Give him Joshua for a middle name and in the long run, everyone will be a lot happier.

They have to have the exact same name, so for him to be a junior his name has to be Joshua Blake.

Yes it has to be the same full name to actually be a junior.

I think that you'd have to do Joshua Blake for it to be Jr.
