Every change in pH by 1 changes the ratio of H+ to OH- by a factor of 10. OH- would make the pH go up. 1000 fold increase is a change by 10^3, so the pH would increase by 3, and 5 + 3 = 8. The resulting pH would be 8.

    1000 is 10^3
so it would increase 3 pH values, becoming 8
