Do you go to college to be a prison officer?

I want to leave school and be a prison officer, but when I leave school what do I do? Do i go to college to become a prison officer?

Hello Amy. I am assuming you mean a Correctional Officer in a state prison? If so, you will need either a High School diploma or a G.E.D. That is the minimum requirement to be hired. If you intend on being promoted or moving into another area of state service ( such as Case Manager, Unit Manager, Class Spec, etc), you will need at least an Associate's Degree. Once you are in the door, you can work and go to college in your off hours until you have your degree.

Once actually hired, you will attend a Corrections Training Academy for up to 7 weeks studying penal law as it applies to the job.

The answer is yes. My cousin became a prison guard. He went to college. His major was law. Theres different levels of law courses. Some to be a lawyer, & others to be in law enforcement. There is additional training after you graduate. You dont have to go to a full 4 year college either. My other friend got his degree from vocational school, & his options were to be a guard, police, forest ranger, DNR.

lol no ^_^ it's not exactly college but it's more like Training to become one. i'm not sure how long it takes but it shouldn't be that long.
oh and ps: prison doesn't seem like something you should be setting your eyes on,i never wanna go lmao

you need to start by not leaving school, all knowledge is useful. then try to get into the police academy, after you graduate. you also need to talk to another prison guard and they could tell you all the facts. hope you enjoy it
