Where can I check if a SS number is good?

Hello my dad just opened a small business and we want to hire some help, but before we do we want to make sure that the person is legal. Is there a website I can go to check if the SS number I was provided with is valid? Thanks in advance.

Not as such. Most of the ones that you see advertised are scams.

You can do some checking on your own by checking the provided SSN against the list of dead SSNs. The Social Security Administration publishes an index of SSNs that have been "retired" by virtue of the fact that the holder of that number has died.

The best thing to do is to do a simple background check on anyone you hire. It's not terribly expensive (especially since it may save you money on your insurance), and it'll check for more than just fake SSNs.

Many states offer this service to business for free or either very low cost. Check with your local State Police force to see if they are aware of such a service.

It's called E-Verify and is run by the DHS. And it is free.
