Is there a type of visa you can apply for in order to work in the USA for a year?

Is there any sort of visa you can apply for in order to work in the United States for a year? I am an Irish guy applying to an American university next year and I would like to earn a bit of money before I go. Any info would be brilliant! Thanks!

work in Ireland or anywhere in the EU. You are not going to get a work visa for the US. And you will need lots of money if you go to an US university, tuition fees are going to be about $20 000 a year. I'd recommend starting at an European university and transferring for your last 2 years. That's going to save you enough money to not have to work for two years...

I know a j-1 visa will let you in to work for at least 6 months, I am not sure about a year.

THat is what my husband had when I first met him, and I married him later the next year when he got another j-1 visa.
    He was from Poland.
