We decorate with a 'Santa' theme. We collect Santa figures, and use a lot of red and green. However I have expensive taste and am VERY picky about what comes into our house as decorations. We have a cherry fireplace that gets decorated with homemade gingerbread houses, and a Santa stands on the hearth. A nice satin runner is on the table with a 2-ft tree as the center piece. Our big Christmas tree has colored lights and it's ornaments are a mix of our favorites from our childhoods, new elegant ornaments (my favorite is a simple red bulb with a black Santa belt around it's middle), along with a few cute/goofy ones we have gotten in our relationship (like our 'Our first Christmas' ornament is two little mice at the movies and it says "The Year's Cheesiest"). I like to think we have a great mix of 'grown up' decorations with just the right amount of 'childlike' thrown in.

Thank you for asking this! We don't decorate until after Thanksgiving in my house, so this we a great way to imagin my house all done up for the holidays!

I think any theme is tacky. People go overboard with one character or color and it's always just too much. A lot of people think colored lights are tacky too. You have to admit clear gives a more clean look. Having said that we have used both colored and clear. We have a patchwork kind of Christmas - we just use things we've collected over the years.

The best way to not do tacky is to do natural. Use lives trees, wreaths and garland, pine cones, cranberries, etc. The smell in your house will be amazing! Plus live decor doesn't need a bunch of clutter hanging all over it - maybe some lights, a few bows, etc.

But in the end, it's your house and the decor is for your enjoyment. Do what you feel looks best in your home and don't worry about other's opinions.

Probably the neatest house I have seen recently was one where they decided that they would not put out ANY store-bought decorations except the lights on the tree. They strung popcorn and cranberries, made paper chains, hung popcorn ball and cookies. it was a bunch of broke college kids and it was one of the neatest decorating jobs I have ever seen.
