Can I eat the nettle in my back yard?

I live in Washington state, I don't know much about nettles, or various kinds of nettles. Can I eat and drink ones native to my area? Are they all edible/drinkable?

Yes as long as there are no known contaminants on the plant or in the soil. I would not pick nettles that have grown by the roadside because these pick up more in the way of pollution from car exhausts. Be sure it is stinging nettle. Get someone else to identify the plant for you if necessary.

I would only use young nettles if you are going to cook them for soup for instance. You can use older leaves for tea however. I would air dry them for storage purposes.
