depends on what part of NY, but none of them are what you would call cheap.

600 sq foot studio for 2,500/month is the norm in Manhattan.

you might be able to find 1 bedroom for like 800..ans this is if you get lucky and do extensive research and you dont mind living in the not so good areas . apts are expensive. take a look at craigslist.

(the crime rate is low, plus if you dont deal with the drug dealers and all those worthless people you shouldnt have an issue)
