Can I claim items that were stolen from me on my taxes?

I had some things stolen out of my car. I made a police report but did not do an insurance claim. Can I deduct (or get some kind of credit) on my South Carolina taxes?

Even though you did not put in an insurance claim, you must reduce your loss by the amount of any available insurance coverage that you have. So, you may as well do the insurance claim.

Your state tax will depend on your federal taxable income. You may be able to reduce your taxable income by taking a casualty loss. Your deduction is limited to the remaining loss after you subtract the available insurance reimbursement, $100, and 10% of your adjusted gross income.
