At leaset Dubya still oves the troops enough to go to offer aid, why not his replacement?

Last night former President George W. Bush and his wife Laura made a secret visit to the devastated military families at Fort Hood.

The Bushes instructed the commander of the mourning military base that they wanted no publicity. With their Secret Service detail, Bush and his wife made the 30 mile trip unannounced from their ranch near Crawford, Texas Friday evening.

Fox News broke news of the visit this afternoon. Other sources said the former first couple spent about two hours meeting with family and soldiers, talking quietly and at times hugging them as they did in private at other times of crisis such as post-9/11.

Most presidents come to feel a genuine respect and affection for the people they lead as commander-in-chief and sometimes the affection is reciprocated.

Many base workers and residents on Fort Hood are still reeling from the shooting this week by Major Nidal Malik Hasan that killed 13 people and wounded dozens of others. (See video below.)

The White House announced today the Obamas plan to attend a memorial service there on Tuesday. Some foreign news reporters have begun to write unflattering comparisons of the emotional Bush vs the ever-cool, possibly cold Obama.

Pres. and Laura Bush have class.
The Obamas shouldn't be bothered to give up an evening of cocktails and dancing, should they?

Yeah Bush LOVESSSSSSSSSSSS the troops. It's tough love but hey thats the way Jesus would've wanted it. George knew how to deny the bill that extended benefits to vets, under minded the GI Bill, letting Walt. Reed fall apart, extended deployment, sent in the most corrupt group of contractors who benefit under no bid contracts to provide the worst provisions in battle history.

Bush loved the troops the way they should be loved by praising them on camera and denying nearly every extendable benefit.

You mean the Bush that got 4,500 service members killed in Iraq? That Bush?

Funny how Bush wanted "no publicity" and yet Fox (of course) "broke the news" that he went. If he didn't want publicity, and Fox is pro-Bush (you know it is), how did this get reported?

Obama devoted his entire Saturday address to the Ft. Hood tragedy. He'll be there for the memorial service. I'm sure you'll find a way to criticize him for that as well.

If he went, you'd accuse him of being a publicity hound. You did this when he went to Dover at 4 am. Bush NEVER went to Dover, NEVER.

Bush lives in Texas, where the incident happened, and he's not President.

Obama doesn't need to cry a river to show support. How ridiculous.

So much for a "secret" visit when the media is reporting on it lol

Bush, a private citizen, drove for half an hour to visit them. Good for him.

Obama, the President, will be attending the memorial service by flying several hours on Air Force One. And be honest, if he'd gone there yesterday or today, you'd accuse of him setting up a photo op. Right?

And I guess folks are forgetting the 4,000 dead because Bush wanted to play war in Iraq.

That's a touching story. Obama, by way of comparison, used his visit to fallen troops who were being transferred to the US for burial as a photo op.

Bush had no business trying to upstage the new president. If someone had done that to him, you would see his true character in anger, as he is very spiteful. He never paid his respects to all the dead soldiers returned rom Iraq in coffins. He did not want the American public to turn against the Iraq thing so no pictures were allowed. Bush should not have sneaked onto the base at night, like he sneaked in cowardly fashion into Iraq by night for a photo op. But this was disgraceful.

He's a liberal. He doesn't have the respect for our military that some other former presidents did and still have.

I mean look at his waffling on sending troops to Afghanistan. The effing General flat out told him, "look, send more troops or we'll lose this thing". And it took him how long to reply?

He's more concerned with his stupid medical plan and all the other BS liberal handout programs him and his affiliates want to push.
You know, GWB may have had some issues, but he always showed the respect to US, the men and women of the Armed Forces.
You just don't get that from Obama. He's not "all that and a bag of chips" that everyone thought he was...people were "blinded by love". The guy celebrates mediocrity and that's what we'll get.

You know all of you on here acting like Bush didn't want to go to Dover, Bush didn't want people to see the body count so they wouldn't turn against the war...blah blah, liberal CRAP.
1st of all, THAT WASN'T A POLICY THAT BUSH STARTED. Obama opened that up so that he could faux show his BS support.
How do you know he never went to Dover? Show me where it says that and I'll delete this part of my answer.
And don't act like Fox News is biased....you probably watch MSNBC. Thankfully your fake pillar of "hope and yes we can!" is showing it's true colors.

God Bless those lost in Ft. Hood, their families, and all those lost in our wars around the world and their families.

    Aw, that's nice.

Typical, Dems hate it that military can be comforted in a time of crisis instead of demoralized. Does their Bush-hating party line know no bounds?

If Bush really didn't want any publicity, no one would have found out and you wouldn't have been able to post this question. Where was Bush during the 3,000 funerals of the American soldiers he was responsible for killing in his phony and illegal war in Iraq? I don't believe he went to a single funeral. What did he do about providing the troops body armor? Or providing better protection on tanks to protect the troops from land mines? Where was he when the contractors like Haliburton that he was paying billions to were supplying the troops with spoiled food while the company officials had fancy meals? Where was he after Hurricane Katrina? Did he care that people who couldn't find homes were being kicked out of their trailers? His mother thought that living in the Superdome without food or water was an improvement for them. Did he care that the trailers were contaminated with formaldehyde and causing health problems, but more than 3 years later families had no other choice but to live there? Do you really think that he couldn't have helped these people if he really cared about them? Don't tell me that Bush cares about anyone other than his rich friends. It is a publicity stunt designed to make him look less evil after 8 years of systematically and intentionally destroying everything that is good about our country. Obviously it was "leaked" on purpose to make it look like Bush didn't want anyone to know, but the only reason he could possibly have for going is to get publicity. The fact that Fox "News" reported this rather than a legitimate news organization is clear cut evidence of his true intent. He should stay on his ranch and practice riding his bicycle without falling down.

Why are you assuming that what Obama is doing by going to these funerals is phony? Most likely he shouldn't go and should be working on getting a good health care bill passed, because far more people are dying from a lack of health care. If he didn't go you'd be here posting about how insensitive he is to the families of those who were killed.

I don't think you can answer any of these questions. You probably had no idea of any of what I mentioned because you get all your "news" from Fox "News", and they only report good things about the far-right. Actually, there are no good things. They just lie and try to make bad things look like good things, and they ignore the really bad things that they can't possibly make look good.
