Is your work or writing somewhere online?

Have you ever posted your writing online?

Well, just in case someone isn't sure of the legalities, once you've posted something online it will never be professionally published or accepted by a publishing house, because technically posting your work online is a form of publication, and no one will buy something when the world can access it for free.

So with that said, have you currently or previously posted something online?
I once posted a short chapter on Y!A, and a week later read a post coincidentally similar to my piece. :(

So is your work on the internet?

Additional Details

Thanks everyone, some great answers!

Although luckily I just posted the first 2, 000 words, and the other person's copy wasn't very...good. :) I'm still going to work on it though, because I'm in love with the world I created. :)

Its fantastic to see so many people taking care of their writing by keeping it offline. :)

Mmmm... yeah. But it's only, like, fanfiction, so just some Naruto "made up" stories.

I've only posted like a paragraph, asking what people thought of my writing. Nothing that really gave away anything to my story.
I'm so sorry that happened to you!

My work is NOT on the internet. I posted a portion of it- the first intro page on here to get feedback and got 39 responders who claimed they loved it across the board and one person that said it would be pitched in the trash. But I deleted the post so it wouldn't be , you know, online.
Plus it was just the first page of a 150 page book with out spoilers, ect., so I'm not worried at all.

I'm so very sorry this happened to you, sweetie. I'm so sorry. People steal, and it's just really hard. It's so hard for a writer to come up with some good material and then you want to get feedback but people can take that and run with it.

Did you post your ENTIRE work online because even Stephenie Meyers and Mario Puzo have "excerpts" of their work available online to read- a chapter or so. Get on amazon and almost every book there has that. Also, if you change a couple of minor things in the material you posted, it becomes different than what you originally posted online.AND you can get a FEDERAL copyright of your work for like $35 I believe. So somebody lifted your work? Well, it all comes down to who has the FEDERAL copyright first and I somehow doubt this other person has done that, honestly. Your copyright will stand up in court.
