You can get a flexible mesh that will follow the crooked crack at your hardware store. Sand the area down, mud the flexible tape in and let it dry, sand and smooth it as needed then you are ready for paint etc.

With a tip of a key or similar object, do widen the crack by beveling. Then fill with wall compound, not spackle. Sand, prime and paint.

I had this problem and just filled the crack as it was. The crack returned within a year. I was told by a sheetrock taper to use the method of opening the crack wider and to use joint compound. The reason for this is to expose more wall material for the compound to adhere to.

It has been three years since I repaired the wall this way, and you cannot even tell where the crack was.
