My Whirlpool washing machine stopped spinning and is making a burning smell. Anyone know whats going on?

My washing machine stopped spinning about a week ago. The clothes are left soaked at the end of the cycle. When I open the washer lid there is a burning smell coming from the washer. No smoke, just burning. My husband replaced a safety switch that has to do with opening the lid of the washer, but that didn't do the trick. The washer is only 3 years old. It is agitating and draining the water, just no spinning. Please help!

Is it a top loader? If it is unless it is 30 years old it does not have a belt. It could be a bad clutch, which is often the result of oil leaking out of the top seal of the transmission. If it is not a top loader post the model number.

main drive belt is slipping,
call a repair man

i am thinking maybe your belt as slipped off the motor..

Turn the drum by hand and if it's difficult to turn then the bearing on the drum is seizing and needs replacing.The burning smell is probably the drive belt slipping as the motor tries to turn the drum.
