Concerned about house being rented...?

We just moved out of a house that we rented and didn't really notice alot of underlying problems with the home until we were looking over it to be sure we had everything out and everything was clean. The main thing that concerned me was all of the black mold we noticed...the home is older and it looks like it was caused from improper plumbing under the house. We told the landlord and he was just like yeah it's been like that forever...it's just part of an old house. Should we report this to the health dept. or whomever...as I am sure he plans to rent it out again without addressing the problem.

Additional Details

Thanks for your answers...I mainly asked this due to being concerned about peoples health. I had several people tell me I should report the condition of the house that saw it themselves, but I do think it's not my place to since I no longer live there. I wished there were laws requiring annual inspections on rented properties.

As you no longer live there you can't file a complaint.

Unless you are part of owner of this property it is none of your business if he rents it or not.

To be honest. what you describe is more common than you think, private landlords are notorious for not keeping up with health and safety aspects of properties. i have lived in a few privately rented properties over the years and although not all of my landlords were bad at the upkeep of the houses/flats i rented, most were. i moved into one that whenever my friends visited complained of headaches and sleepiness whenever they came round, i was also suffering, it turned out carbon monoxide was coming out the gas fire. you should report this to the authorities as he could rent it out to someone with kids and the kind of damp you are describing is bad for the health of children and adults. by law the landlord has to have a safe property and install smoke alarms and have the property in a safe healthy condition.

I would suggest you report it to the housing authority in the city that the house is located And the health departments, just to be certain to let them know how wide spread the issue is.
I know that recently the housing authority condemned an apartment building near where I grew up for the level of Black Mold found inside, so hopefully your housing authority should be who you can turn to for help, too.

and I Hope you and your family have no ill health effects from living in such a potentially dangerous place!

The best policy is to mind your own business.

Also...be careful as to slander...yes, slander.

Unless you took a mold-test kit out to the house, that you are A LICENSED inspector and know for a fact that it is toxic black mold, you should tread lightly.

People think that if they see mold, and it's black...it's toxic black mold.

There are TONS of non-toxic mold AND mildew..that are black in color.
