with shakespeare on the back,around the edge is payable to banbury oxford and reading,vi,any ideas about this coin,jack

It is commonly known as a Conder token; named after the man who first cataloged them, and they were privately minted and used as currency when coinage was short in the UK in the late 1700's. Tokens are a part of numismatics (study of currency) known as exonumia. Shakespeare seems to have been a fairly common subject of these tokens thus not too valuable. By the way, I would be willing to bet the edge reads "Payable at Banbury, Oxford, or Reading." I hope that helps.
