How to file amended tax return to get tax credit on the tuition reimbursement that I had to pay back?

Hi, if I received tuition reimbursement from my employer but leave the company before the required period was up and had to pay back the reimbursed amount, can I amend my tax return from the years that I got the reimbursement and get the education tax credit for the tuition and fees that I paid in those years?

If so, on the w-2s or other forms for the years that I received tuition reimbursement, doesn't it list that my employer paid for the tuition/fees? Do I actually file an amended return saying that I had to pay it back (two) years later so now I'm amending the return from years ago?

I just want to know that I can go back and get the tax credit so I won't lose out on both the tuition reimbursement and tax credit on tuition/fees. If anyone can tell me if it's really possible to do this I would appreciate it very much.

Thank you.

You have 3 yrs from the due date of the return or 2 yrs from when the taxes were paid which ever is later to file an amended return on Form 1040X. Your local IRS office will do the paperwork for free/no stress 8:30-4:30 M-F. Call them # 800-829-1040 with any q.
