The US Department of Education defines a first generation college student as an individual who's neither parent has GRADUATED with a 4 year bachelor's degree.

If either one of your parents attended and dropped out, or only got their associates degree or a certification less than an Associates degree (LVN, LPN, for example) then you are a first generation college student.
