Whats going to happen to my son now that he no longer gets read to?

My 6 year old son has been read 3 books every night before bed time as part of his bed time routine since toddler hood. He began reading just over this Summer when he was 5.5 years old and his reading level was tested and its at 3rd grade level.

He lives with his father and his father has stopped reading to him at night as part of his bedtime routine. Whats going to happen? How will this effect him down the road since he no longer gets read to at night? I know this isnt a major issue, but even so, you always hear how its good for a child to be read to and we were on that path and its stopped now.

Somebody give me some insight.

If he completely stops reading then his reading level may drop or remain at the level it is now. Most likely if he was reading 3 books a night he is still interested in reading and will read at other time. It should be okay.

children should always be read to no matter what the routine.. his father should make time and read to him before bed time also.. maybe not three books .. why not asking your son to read to you every other night then he will get out of the habit of mom and dad reading to him... soon he will get out of the routine and become independent when it comes to story time before bed

i do this with my son also.. his dad isn't doesn't do the reading thing either but for mothers it is a given.... spending quality time with your youngster molds them into very well behaved gentlemen.

my son is reading at a grade 7 level so i don't read to him anymore.. he reads to me but i have to listen or he will start the story all over again...lol

    i hope this helps...

Generally you're supposed to read to them from something a little higher than their own reading level, so that they get exposed to new vocabulary.

I remember my mom reading literally hundreds of books out loud to my father (who was extremely dyslexic), and I ended up listening by default. (I was exposed to a lot of stuff like James Herriot, James Thurber, Richard Adams that way, things I wouldn't have read otherwise.)

When I got into something like 4th or 5th grade, I started reading to MY mom at bedtime. Mostly Beverly Cleary type books.

My son is also dyslexic and won't read, so I read to him. He's 8. We're in the middle of The Hobbit right now, and we've gone through four books in the Redwall series. I'm looking for other things he might like.

What about books on tape? My son will listen to those for a couple of hours non-stop in his room if you let him. He liked the Mouse and the Motorcycle series a great deal.

You cannot control what happens at your son's father's house unless your son's father's house is your house, too. It's not. Do your best with him and stop worrying about what happens when he is not with you. How does homeschooling work when he is with you part of the time and dad the other part?
