How do I reinstall my closet shelf? It is just an unattached board. I don't know how the person removed it.?

In 1990, this house was remodeled so that I could move in. The carpenters did put shelves in the closets, but they did not attach them to the wood sidepieces. The boards simply rested on top of the braces that are against the wall. In 2003, when I had the stained carpet removed someone who was supposed to be doing that removed my closet shelf (why? I don't know. Anyway, they did) and they did not put it back, but they left it for me. I do not know how to get it back correctly. I started, but it is crooked and it is stuck right now. I got a hammer and hit it, so that it would move up. My thinking was that if it got up high enough it would drop back level.

they just drop in place,
if it doesn't drop in make sure you have it straight,
start by holding it at an angle against the wall, make sure its touching the wall the full length and then drop it down.
if it still hangs up try switching it end for end, perhaps the walls are not perfectly square and it was cut originally to fit a slightly angled wall.
it may fit perfectly if you swap it end for end.
