You'll do GREAT, because you WANT to do it!

Here are a few things I like in a sewing machine:

one-button reverse
adjustable widths on the zig-zag stitch
button-hole stitch (some come with a special attachment, too)
stretch stitch (for sewing knits, swim suit fabrics)
easy threading process (have them show you how to thread it)
easy way to get thread on the bobbin (they can show you that, too)

You might try to find on in the classifieds of your newspaper or post an ad at the grocery store. People get rid of sewing machines all the time because they just don't use them. The older ones have metal parts that last longer than the new ones that use plastic parts.

Otherwise, look for a name brand like Viking (that's what they often use in home-ec class), Singer, Kenmore, Pfaff, maybe White...

Have fun sewing! --- Don't you love Project Runway?!?

Start your sewing career with a GOOD USED sewing machine rather than buying new. Ask around to find someone who's selling a good oldie. If you want to buy new, Consumer Reports recommends the Kenmore #15358 sewing machine for beginners - a mechanical model with 13-37 stitches, retailing at $120.

You have a way to go before you can make your own designs into garments. First you need to learn how to use a sewing machine. How to read a pattern, put in a sleeve, a collar, a zipper, a pocket. You need to know how to make a garment using a pattern first. Learning to drape fabric and draft a pattern is advance sewing.

Go to a sewing machine dealer. They will have good used machine. You can sit and demo the machines and you should get free lessons on how to use the machine you buy. Buying a machine from Wal Mart or any other store can be trouble. You have no one to teach you how to use your machine. Even figuring out how to thread it and wind the bobbin can be a challenge without help. You need to find beginner sewing lessons next.

A standard sewing machine will do just fine but i suggest getting one that has a zipper attachment for adding zippers to a skirt.
