Can I substitute an Eb alto clarinet for an Eb contra bass clarinet part in "An American Christmas"?

We've just received the music "An American Christmas" arranged by Robert W. Smith. The music calls for an Eb contra bass clarinet. Can I play use an alto clarinet for that part? (the part better be within the range of an alto clarinet) I am currently playing the music for world part 1st horn in Eb.

Both clarinets are in the key of e flat so both transpose the written notes up a minor third. Because of this they can read the same music and will sound the same. Obviously one will sound much lower then the other, but technically, you can substitute one for the other. It could mess up the balance of the piece though, but it should be fine.
