At large CPA firms, does a CPA need to be a specialist?

For example in: Taxes, Auditing, Aquisitions and Mergers.

Absolutely. In fact within the major classifications you named above, you will work mostly within a specialty. For example, if you work in audit, you will generally ONLY work in either governmental, non-profit, manufacturing, banking, etc. In the larger firms, there is very little movement out of the niche that you are assigned to. There are just WAY too many rules and regulations to bounce around.

    Any professional in a large firm generally serves as a specialist, unless they are fairly high up the management chain.

    My "day job" is in IT. I've worked as a generalist in small firms where I did everything from routine admin tasks to routing and switching to maintaining database and mail servers to pulling cable for LAN drops. I've also worked in large firms where all I did was maintain several hundred routers or maintained the e-mail system but little if anything else.
