Phlegm with blood and coughs?

This is the 3rd day of my cold. I feel much better today but i still have a cough whenever i laugh. I also cough when i feel like theres some phlegm i need to expel. I have been coughing yellow phlegm but today i saw a little bit of blood in my phlegm. About all of my cold symptoms have gone away except that my left nose is still stuffed. I am 21 and am a smoker for about a year. This past weekend, i particularly smoked about 15 cigs and some marijuana. I stopped smoking because my throat became irritated thus beginning my fever and cold symptoms. I am worried about two things: my cough, and blood in my phlegm. I am going to see my doctors friday.

Any harsh coughing can break small capillaries in already swollen, irritated airways. These seal themselves back up and is not a symptom that you need to do anything about. What you do need to take care of is the cough - taking an over the counter cough medication regularly will help but your smoking is slowing down your recovery. If you want to get well faster, you need to stop smoking, at least until you are well.
