Smoking marijuana while pregnant?

I just found out my sister I don't talk to very much is four and a half months pregnant almost five. We got into a deep conversation and she told me she's been smoking weed, not a lot, since her first trimester. I guess she would be in her second trimester by now. so I was wondering if she just stops now or before the third trimester, because i read on this web site
http://stason.org/TULARC/health/hemp-marijuana/36-Don-t-children-born-to-pot-smoking-mothers-suffer-from.html

that it is most harmful to smoke marijuana during the third trimester.

but im not sure.
do you think if she stops now she'll be okay? shes only in her first week of her second trimester maybe second.

I will probably get thumbs down but here is goes.
I am going to give you a positive response (I guess).

Well my mother-in-law had four children. She didn't smoke with her first born (which happens to be my husband) but did with the other three. Now they are all healthy and thriving. They are 21, 18, 10, and 5.
the 21 year old weighed 7 lbs. 14 oz.
the 18 year old weighed 6 lbs. 5 oz, (Which there father was a small baby too)
the 10 year old weighed 8 and a half pounds.
the 5 year old weighed 8 lbs and 14 oz.

So you tell me it doesn't always mean something is going to happen. Keep in mind she smoked through the WHOLE last three pregnancies. So if your sister doesn't keep smoking the baby will defiantly fine but if she doesn't that doesn't mean the baby will have problems.

I know some people will assume that mean that I have smoked through my whole pregnancy and no I haven't. I just don't have the desire to or want to.

She needs to stop immediately and there's no way to know for sure if her smoking has caused irreparable damage to the baby

It's never good to smoke during pregnancy, but it's the first trimester that is the most important time for development.

The baby would have already suffered from it. My sister smoked "small" amounts also, and her son is extremely delayed in developement & speech. He also had a very low birth weight. There could have been so much more wrong. Lucky for HIM, his mothers stupidity won't affect him in the long wrong so long as she keeps him in speech therapy.

You're going to get two answers on totally opposite sides of the spectrum on this from people.

    There are some that say smoking pot is absolutely horrible and should never be done anyway even if you're not pregnant.;

Then there will be the ones that say smoking it while pregnant can be harmful just like smoking cigs.

Then you're going to get the ones that dont think pot is bad but not good during pregnancy and then you're going to get the ones that dont think smoking it during pregnancy is bad at all.

There hasn't been a ton of research done on this but what has been done is quite interesting...you can read this one for example on the effects from breast milk.

    http://www.naturalchildbirth.org/natural…

Also search "Melanie Dreher RN PhD Cannabis" - she did a very interesting research project.

I'm not judging anyone on this matter nor stating my opinion but just to answer the question "if she stops now will she be okay?" Stopping now would obviously be better than if she were to continue IF in fact marijuana is harmful during pregnancy.

Other than that....if she were to be drug tested and they found it in her system...she could have issues with CPS once the baby is born.

If she's 4 1/2 months pregnant, almost 5 she's half way through her second trimester already. She needs to stop now. There could be no harm to her baby, but then there could be as well. You just never know. But she shouldn't be continuing doing it.

any kind of smoking is not good! athere are all kinds of problems it could cause and maybe cause none but you should ask her if shes willing to bet her baby's life on that chance. Good Luck
