Linux vs windows... Hardware compatibility?

What are the Range of Hardware that the OS will run on, not looking for a detailed reply, just a basic X > Y with a small description.

Generally speaking linux runs on a large portion of available hardware without problem, but you will have fewer problems with hardware that is not brand new on the market and cutting edge. Hardware that is about 2 years old should work fine.
