Give the ground state electron configuration for Mg2+.


If you could explain the answer that would help because I'm not sure I understand.

Magnesium is 1s2, 2s2 2p6, 3s2. When magnesium ionizes, and loses two electrons, they come from the sublevel that is highest in energy, the 3s sublevel.

Therefore, Mg2+ is 1s2, 2s2 2p6.
