Can an indoor oil tank burst?

I recently had my furnace serviced. The service person asked how old my oil tank was. I told him it was at least 35 years old (the time we've owned the home) and could be up to 50 years old. It is an indoor tank and i'm concerned that it could burst if it has weakened from age. Can an indoor tank be tested? Not sure what to do.

For the most part, indoor free-standing steel tanks have an indefinite life. The insides are generally protected by the contents - no free oxygen so no corrosion. Keep an eye on the exterior and if you see no signs of rust or corrosion anywhere you should be fine. Just make sure that the tank is clear of wall contact and properly mounted. Have your fuel-oil supplier check the tank every few years if it makes you feel better - but such tanks commonly last 80 years, often more.
