Composting is very simple. You don't need to do much besides wait. Use whatever plant material you have. Leaves, grass clippings fruit or veg scraps. Don't put meat or fats in your compost pile.

The other answer suggested you will have usable compost in a few weeks, it's more like 6 months. There are all kinds of gadgets to speed the process, but the simplest most basic way is to just make a pile of this stuff and let it sit. Turning the pile will speed up the process a bit, but even if you don't eventually it will compost. Keep the pile moist and if you can cover it with a dark colored plastic to help keep it warm. It will break down faster in warm damp conditions.
