How do you make a good children's book?

What type of book do kids really REALLY like? I am a kid but I think I like different books than other kids. I pretty much like the Harry Potter series by J.K. Rowling (Lol, a lot of kids like that) the House of Night series by P.C. Cast and Kristen Cast (There is definitely not a lot of kids that like that) and the Cirque Du Freak series by Darren Shan (Not a lot of kids like that series either). I am trying to make a children's book, but one for maybe 9-13 year old girls. I don't want a book like Little Red Riding Hood or Cinderella. No fairytales. What sort of things do most 9-13 year old girls like in a book? Can you give me some books so I can read them for examples?

Kids like stuff that they can relate to
like if their having trouble in school
you can write about a character that has trouble in school
Or maybe even write about your child hood and spice it up a little

You need to reflect and think of what children like.Then gather your information and make up characters and a funny or learning idea. Then just write a sloppy copy, edit it then publish it

Sweep, Lightning Thief, Pendragon, and Maximum Ride are some of my favorites. Whatever you choose to right about, give it feeling, thats what really hooks in the reader.
