Question about white wine.?

My mother has extremely high blood pressure (it runs in the family). She is also an alcoholic. She drinks approximately 2 bottles of white wine every night. She has been on many different types of blood pressure medicine but nothing works. Does white wine counter act blood pressure medicine? Does white wine have a high sodium content? Does white wine naturally increase blood pressure? I'm specifically asking about 'white' wine because that's her alcohol of choice. She does not drink red wine. She never drinks beer and she rarely drinks other types of alcohol.

Additional Details

Hmmm. I'm not sure what med she's currently taking. She's furious with her doctor for not 'curing' her. I'm trying to convince her that her drinking is hindering her ability to control her high blood pressure. She just won't listen to me and she doesn't believe a word I say. I'm so frustrated. What can I do?

I've tried. She refuses to go to AA. How do I convince her?

Does white wine nightly (2 glasses) elevate your blood pressure?

Drinking too much alcohol does affect your blood pressure, especially if you are a chronic heavy drinker. I know 2 drinks does not seem "heavy", but studies show that drinking 1 ½ to 2 drinks per day increases your risk of high blood pressure.
Drinking two glasses of wine nightly also interferes with the effectiveness of any high blood pressure medications or treatments you may be using to control your high blood pressure.
Alcohol also stimulates the release of cortisol (a hormone). Cortisol promotes sodium retention and increases potassium losses, both of which can blood pressure to increase.

Thank you everyone - I think I just needed to vent last night AND receive confirmation that I'm not crazy when I tell her that alcohol affects her blood pressure.

Any alcohol has a detremental effect on any medicine, but I shouldn`t worry too much, my dad had high blood pressure, and he could knock back a bottle of whisky, if he was in the mood...didn`t bother him in the slightest.! (is your mum on "Aldermet" tablets ?)

If you prefer a light Pinot Grigio, you are missing out on many of the antioxidants found in grape skin, like resveratrol, which may help keep you get slim as well as protect your heart. There are less flavonoids, beneficial micro-nutrients found in the skins as well. All that being said, there have been few studies comparing the two. The whites with the highest amounts of flavonoids are made from granache blanc grapes in the Mediterranean regions: Spain, southern France, and Sardinia. Regardless of the shade of wine you prefer, to reap the health benefits of the wine, women should limit their intake of wine to one glass a day.

I recommend cutting back to at least 1 glass per day or less. One glass equaling 4 ounces or 10 grams. Consider red wine due to its link with some heart benefits.

If your mother is drinking as a habit it is not easy to quit. You may not ever be able to understand how difficult it could be for her to break her habit. When people get older they become comfortable with what they are doing and it is life shaking to change something like this. Try to be understanding. Let her know you love her and want her to be around for longer. Realize, only she can change herself. Ultimately it is her problem but it hurts you as well as her. Good luck
