Look up The EYFS (http://nationalstrategies.standards.dcsf… online and it will show you the various stages of physical development. It is split 3 categories: Movement and Spacial Awareness (large movement skills, balance, climbing, playing safe etc), Health and Bodily Awareness (Understanding hygiene, toilet training etc) and Using Equipment (Fine manipulative: scissor control, building blocks, one handed tools etc.) You may also want to read up on Mary Sheridan as she does Development in under 5’s.

Physical development is usually broken up into gross motor and fine motor. Gross motor involves the arms and legs. Activities such as running, jumping, and climbing are all gross motor activites. Fine motor skills are developed over time with practice of using the fingers. Playing with playdough, peg boargs, sorting through small toys, and putting together legos are examples of fine motor skills.
