Is this a correct analysis of edgar allen poe's the pit and the pendulem?

I read the whole story and and a couple of summaries, and the summaries stated he was in prison the whole time. But to me, it seemed like he was describing hell and towards the end of the story you findout hes in a prison after the general rescues him. Is my analysis correct?

I believe it is describing a prisoner being held, tortured and condemned to death during the Spanish Inquisition. He is in cell for the story.
