True, drinking it is great first hand experience. Also read some books. Where did cocktails come from How is beer, wine and liquor made, and what sub categories are in each? Learn to taste the beverage your drinking instead of just downing it. You will gain a huge appreciation for the beverage itself and all the things you learned about it will come together.

hit up bevmo or something similar and make it a point to pick up a handle of something you haven't yet tried once a week. you'll find favorites soon. :) being organized helps though; ie: this month, you'll try a whole bunch of rum, then it'll be vodka testing, etc. but remember: ALWAYS, if it's something new, your first taste MUST be pure. no mixers, nothing. after that, you can experiment all you want.
