Kurt. James's a cool guy, but Kurt Cobain was brilliant.

You can't really try to compare those two... they both were great for completely different reasons.

Hetfield was a better musician overall, but Cobain was basically the logo of Nirvana.

Hetfields more talented but they both have different style. Hetfields pretty lousy live I hear but kurt is amazing.

Cobain was probably more influential on future bands, but both are good in different ways, its really hard to compare them to each other.

Cobain did nothing but mumble and strum brainlessly, and if he was alive today, all Nirvana would be is "that band with that one song from the 90's." Music will have moved on anyway.
The average Nirvana song is hapless mumbling with an occasional "Yeeeah!" thrown in to keep the listener from falling asleep. His writing was lazy, he had no knowledge of how to play a guitar, and he did anything but sing.

That is a strange comparison. Both had different styles of music and very different sounding voices. I would have to say James Hetfield though, Metallica has influenced more bands than Nirvana, even though metal is less poplular than rock. They were both entertaining to watch live but Kurt often would just sit in a chair and play on his slower songs. Even if Kurt was still alive and Nirvana was still together I would rather see Metallica live.

James Hetfield is the best speed metal singer there ever was (imo). Even though Metalica aren't speed metal anymore, he was the first great singer. They just didn't get popular, because of their musicianship alone. It's because Hetfield can sing, and he has the perfect singing voice for this style of music, when you think about it. I call it a lion's roar. Almost all the other bands just have someone screaming, or trying to sound like a demon. Also Hetfield has a great presence. He has this "take no prisoner's" look. And the fact that he plays rhythm guitar, while he sings, just adds to his greatness. Kurt Cobain on the other hand is good in his own right, but I have a hard time understanding his singing, or his lyrics.
