I don't think he knew what being "Famous" really meant until he experienced that fame first hand.

He wanted to Prove the people who thought he was nothing but a loser wrong, and He didn't want to be a CELEBRITY, he wanted people to focus on the music not his life.

he would have been Perfectly content just being able to pay his bills, having a roof over his head and being somewhat successful in the underground scene, I think they left sub pop and signed with a major label because sub pop was having money problems, and he was pretty much broke..

I think you should watch "About a Son", it explains alot

It's part of the whole "be careful what you wish for, you just might get it" train of thought.

Lots of people think they want something or someone...until they obtain it. Many things are romanticized in our minds to the point that they seem Utopian. Reality is often quite different.

I also think Nirvana's sudden popularity has something to do with it. They didn't gradually become popular, and they weren't moderately popular. They were superstars and household names overnight. That takes its toll on anyone.

    Did he?
He wanted to be a musician, he wanted to spread his music... Although the "fame" that came along with it as your sterotypical celebrity, was not exactly what he was striving for.

The fact that he helped pioneer a completely new genre of music proves that he didn't want to adhear to the norm, or to the generally accepted form of what a musician at the time was. Otherwise he would have worn tight leather pants and 2 cans of hair spray for every show.

LOL what?! he did? That doesn't make no sense. Maybe he use to what to be famous. Like the rest of us, we all had a moment when we wanted to be famous, but when we got there, we hated it because of the pressure, media and people always buggering you.

I think he never wanted to be famous, he just wanted to play his music, but he got famous while doing so. You can't really do much about that.

Just an additional note along with the other answers - I remember reading that his music was so personal to him, that he was surprised when people came out in droves to hear it.

I think he just said that, and didn´t mean it really. Who does not love the attention that fame brings. It had alot to do with his heroin addiction I believe.

He didn't want to become famous. He just wanted to make music. Problem was, he was just way to good at it. In his suicide note he stated he never wanted to be a Freddie Mercury.

Are you sure he really didn't want to be famous? He used to say (before he actually became famous) that he wanted to be part of the 27 Club. I honestly believe he actually DID want to become famous. I still love him though.

I agree with Deke. It is always one of those "Grass is Always Greener" things.

For example, I live in San Antonio and my teen-aged son once saw the Spurs point guard, Tony Parker out in public and he and some friends went and asked for an autograph (no, Eva Longoria wasn't with him at the time). He (according to my son) pretty rudely told them "No! Leave me alone. I'm trying to eat supper here!" While one might judge such an action, put yourself in his shoes. How would you like to NEVER be able to go out in public because you got hounded every step of the way?

Fame isn't all it's cracked up to be.

Who told you he wanted to be famous? He wanted to be a musician, but he didn't want fame. The cover for In Utero is a metaphor for his exposure and lack of a private life. And if he has just quit the band, that wouldn't have gotten rid of his fame. He felt it would have been easier to kill himself then leave the band wait for a number of years for his fade to slowly fade away.

Kurt Cobain didn't hate fame until he became famous. It sucked the fun out of the only love in his world.
He had to "pretend he was having 100% fun" as stated in his suicide note.
He despised the "yuppies" driving down Sunset Blvd, singing the wrong lyrics to his songs.
Courtney love was an aggressor in his fame. She often pushed him into contracts he had no interest in.

I think it's a double-edged sword... and once you're there, it's too late to turn back.

I think everyone wants to be appreciated for their unique viewpoints/ artistic abilities/ "takes" on life... but once you achieve the level of success that Nirvana had, your life is not your own any longer, and the feeling of being SO watched, with SO many expectations of what you'll create next... well I can totally see that being very paralyzing, with every mistake on the front page of gossip magazines.. I tell ya, I CRINGE for people who are stalked by the paparazzi. No one is at their best *all the time*, and I would die if someone put photos of my cellulite-y *** up on a grocery store tabloid.

Wow. Sort of made it personal, didn't I? lol Sorry...
