How much do cyclists spend on their bike in cycling organizations at college?

I don't want to have a crap bike compared to theirs but keep in mind i'm asking about non competitive cyclists so what's good for someone who does it just as a hobby is going is not going to be the same price as someone who does for competitive. I'm talking about road cycling. I do see people who rike bikes around school and for the most part they probably don't spend more than 100 dollars.

The labor alone to respoke a wheel is about $50. Parts not included. If you're going to lock it to a bike rack for months at a time, and maybe ride it between classes, a $100 BSO (bike-shaped object) will work fine. You won't be out a lot if it gets stolen and you won't know any better that it works like cr@p. If you want to ride in a club, though, plan on spending $500 or more for a real bike. Then add $50 to your budget for a lock.

What? You must be crazy.You can't buy a road bike for under 350. At that price, you will spend money on new components to get it to work properly. All the hobby cyclist, can be worse than the pros. The bike doesn't make the athlete, but the athlete can make the bike. What do you want to do with your bike? Commute? Just chill out and get some exercise? Join a club and cycle for fitness out on the roads?

You need to spend more than $100. Maybe a second hand bike will be cheep, but be careful.

Have a look in the local paper for a cheep used bike.
