Actually, William B. is incorrect. A sentence cannot end with "the." "The" is an identifier: a word that identifies something specific. Therefore, if there is nothing to be identified, "the" has no place in a sentence by itself, much less at the end.

Well, what I don't understand is that people are trying to say that according to the question the correct answer is a sentence that ends specifically with "the" (and not the). However "the" is not a word so the question really is asking for a sentence that ends with the word - the.
