What's the big deal about Kurt Vonnegut?

I know he has a lot of followers and I read his quotes but I didn't get anything interesting from them. Could someone from his followers or people who read him tell my what are his most interesting ideas?

Vonnegut is often saying that life is ridiculous and sad and down right insane, but we are stuck with it and sometime it's good to laugh. He attempts to show the black humor in it. He is a bit philosophical at times, as in Slaughterhouse Five when Billy Pilgrim becomes "lost in time". First, the name Pilgrim means a person going out into a strange new land and the character does just that. Second, lost in time is how it seems when you relive your memories, so he's being somewhat poetic. People with post traumatic stress syndrome relive their harmful experiences and Vonnegut was shaken the death he saw in Dresden. Many people who have seen death in war feel the same way. I hope this does not happen to you, but if you ever begin to see that life is often ridiculous and sad and down right insane, you might begin to appreciate his humor. I do.
