What does this Oscar Wilde Quote mean?

"Most people are other people. Their thoughts are someone else’s opinions, their lives a mimicry, their passions a quotation."

That most people don't ever have an original thought of their own. They listen and follow what someone else has thought, said, opined because it's far safer than having the imagination to come up with something uniquely your own because society hates oddballs and often will make your life very difficult for your non-conforming ideas.

We fail to think for ourselves - we cloak ourselves in those things we admire in others, and display these adopted opinions, traits, desires, fashion, etc..... Not always a bad thing, depending upon the true nature of our 'real' selves.

I liked Inundated in SF 's answer better than mine after Iposted this ... key phrase: [lack of] original thought

    good, thought provoking question ....
