No, not all toy breeds are acceptable for people with asthma. There are several breeds of dogs (all sizes) that are hypoallergenic and don't have dander as well, which is mostly what's responsible for most allergic and asthmatic reactions to dogs. Depending on how badly your son has asthma would determine if you can do this or not...best bet is to spend some time with one (maybe at a shelter in a private room or ask a breeder to allow you to visit, or a friend) to see your sons response.

That being said, Yorkies are supposed to be hypoallergenic and dander free. All three sizes of Poodle are as well. Soft-coated Wheaten Terriers don't have "dog" hair but their coat is more like human hair so they too are supposed to be free of allergens. Cotton de Tulear are also on this list...although harder to find a good breeder since they are less popular. There are several breeds on this list, these are the ones I can remember off the top of my head...do a little research to get a complete list and then find a breeder so you can test your sons response...if there's no issue, enjoy your new puppy!

    I have asthma, too. Small dogs don't cure asthma, but the people that are saying asthma means no dogs don't know what they're talking about. I have 2 dogs and a cat, and have since I was 5. My closest friend has asthma and has 3 dogs. It's not the fur that causes a problem, it's allergies to the dander, and a person with asthma may not have allergies to dog dander. Small dogs have less dander, and a Yorkie fits that qualification. It's a so-called "hypoallergenic" dog. Take your son around some Yorkies to see how he does. Don't let the dog sleep with him, and make sure he washes his hands after he pets it. If you feel it's a good fit, go for it, and enjoy the dog.

    Dogs do not magically cure asthma. Certain animals may not aggravate his asthma (rabbits and poodles are pseudo hypoallergenic) but nothing will "cure" his asthma.

    Please don't get a dog. He might be fine for a little bit but if his asthma becomes aggravated the dog is displaced and your son will be heartbroken.

    Try to get your son into the fascinating world of aquariums.

    There no cure for asthma.....yet. Not all toy breeds are suitable for all asthmatics.

    I take it you mean which breeds are least likely to cause an adverse reaction in an asthmatic, which includes swelling of the airways due to irritation from canine dander/saliva & the inability to draw a decent breath ect.....

    Breeds typically suggested are those with *wool* type coats such as the Poodle or Bedlington or some fine coated breeds.

    The level of tolerance will depend on the individual asthmatic, some would not be able to tolerate any dogs, others could but only certain breeds.

    Find the breeds you like, contact a responsible breeder & then arrange to visit the breeder & their dogs to be sure you son would not have an adverse reaction. I would advise visiting at on at least two occasions before you decide to commit to purchasing a puppy.

    no dog breeds can cure asthma but sometimes people can tolerate small dogs.
    sometimes there are medications but most people prefer not to take medications. i have severe asthma but my family still owns a dog. i think there is only a problem if he is actually allergic to pet dander/fur.
    these are some low/non allergic dogs
    * Airedale Terrier
    * American Hairless Terrier
    * Bedlington Terrier
    * Bichon Frise
    * Chinese Crested – Hairless and Powderpuff
    * Coton de Tulear
    * Kerry Blue Terrier
    * Mexican Hairless (Xoloitzcuintle)
    * Peruvian Inca Orchid (Hairless)
    * Poodles
    * Portuguese Water Dog
    * Schnauzer
    * Soft Coated Wheaten Terrier
    * West Highland White Terrier
    yorkies might not be that bad for him- u never know.
    some of the dogs above are really cute, lovable, and trainable dogs. although the hairless ones arent the most appealing. Airedale terriers are pretty big but schnauzers are smaller (as long as they r miniature schnauzers). my cousins have a bishon frise and they r really cute.

    First of all - toy breeds aren't diferent than other breeds. In asthma, the problem is the fur. If I am not wrong, all dogs have fur, exept chinese crested, ain't I right?

    Second, if your son has asthma, I wouldn't really recommend a dog. It can cause attacks, but it's not always like this. Before *getting rid of a dog* visit the vet and the doctor and decide if you want to give your dog to a non-kill shelter to find a new home.

    Peace & Love,

    It depends on how bad your sons condition is. If it is not too bad you could try bringing him around a poodle. I wouldn't go and bring home a dog until you know something for sure.

    Do some Research and find a breeder and take your son there to see how he reacts.

    Don't let people try and tell you that a poodle mix is hypoallergenic because this is totally false. Poodles have hair and all others have fur.
    I hope this helps

    Chihuahua's are known to help asthma, not cure it.

    You need to make sure your son & your self are responsible enough to care for a Chi though.

    You shouldn't get a dog just for this reason though, the dog is going to have needs as well.

    I heard Chihuahuas are good for asthma. My cousin got one when he had asthma. Supposedly the dogs take the asthma away. You can look it up on the net b4 purchasing one. Thats just what I've always heard. Hope this helps.

    dogs dont cure asthma.. the dander on a dog's coat may actually trigger asthma in some people.

    There is NO cure for asthma, just medications to help control and manage it.

    Asthma is a medical condition, no dog can cure medical conditions, that's what doctors are for.
