For one, I think Leonard Cohen is a respectable first, but more recent songwriters I'd go..

Jeff Mangum (Neutral Milk Hotel)
Jesse Lacey (Brand New)
Andy Hull (Manchester Orchestra/Right Away, Great Captain!)
Aaron Weiss (mewithoutyou)
And, I'm not counting people that sell their songs to Nashville executives.
