In Angela Carters book, Wise Children, do you have to have a good understanding of Shakespeare to understand i?

I'm reading it in English at the moment and I was wondering whether I should read up more about Shakespeare to get a better grade ???

A more detailed understanding of Shakespeare might mean you pick up some references that you might otherwise miss (but nothing that a study guide won't help fill in for you). For a higher grade, you could instead read other works by Angela Carter, and perhaps some essays or books about her and her fiction.
