Do trains go across the country, connectively?

as in can you take a train from southern california to nevada get off go on another one that goes to the next state over until you finally get to your destination?

On Amtrak you can go pretty much anywhere there are rails. There is no connection yet to Alaska but they're even talking about that.

There is no longer a passenger train that goes directly from southern Califonia to Nevada. There is a through train from Los Angeles to the East Coast. You can get off at any stop and wait a day or two for the next train and go on to your destination.
