Quite a few. Even more if you go Welsh. They love subbing W and Y in places of vowels.
however: Cry, try, myth, brr, lynx, sty, fry, syzygy, cwm, dryly, dry, and sky pop to my mind

(cwm is my favorite in scrabble but is a real word, lol)

Y is a vowel! There are no words in the english language that do not contain a vowel. Some things in the dictionary, even things people say in life, do not count as "words" to whoever defines the english language.

Y IS A VOWEL... :( Sorry... But I think Psst is a good one.

A, E, I, O, U, and sometimes Y. These are vowels!!!

if a word has no vowels except y. such as sly in this case it is considered a vowel in no other case is it.

HELLLLOOOO ? A E i O U && SOMETiMES Y..

Y is a vowel when it makes the i sound like that. and brr isn't a real word. it's a sound. if brrs a word th then so are pfft, ahahahahahaahahahah, grrrrr, shhhh, etc etc. not really words hon.

rhythm? rhythm's a word without vowels. unless you consider Y a vowel.

Hey! Let's all say that Y is a vowel a hundred times even though 7 other people have already said it!

Y is a vowel, Y is a vowel!!! I don't bother reading the other comments BUT I absolutely HAVE to point out that Y IS A VOWEL!!!

READ THE COMMENTS BEFORE YOU POST!!!!!!!!!!!

Rhythms is the longest word without vowels.

Y is not a vowel, are you guys retarded its a consanent, the vowels are A,E,I,O,U didnt you learn anything at school

thats right a,e,i,o,u are vowels i never read in the books that y is a vowel. i guess u guys first need to re start with ur basics. This happens when u bunk the classes during school hours.

Okay for starters y is a vowel! It's always running late but it is a vowel. Whoever wrote "cwm" w never stands in as a vowel! and if it is a real word what does it mean? eh? what's it mean?

To the ones who say "didn't you learn in school".... IN SCHOOL they teach Y is a vowel when it's making that "i" sound. Why are u insulting others? But I'll add my insult-were u guys not awake during school? Google "y vowel or consonant", look for all sorts of professional site's opinons (agreeing).

And DWM is slang, it isn't a word.

There are many words that do not contain a vowel letter (defined as A, E, I, O, U) in their written form. In most of these, such as try, the letter Y stands for a vowel sound.

Brr isn't a word.

cher was here JPA, they do not teach us such rubbish in a UK schools i am a A grade english college student so i know what im talking about be it is used for a replacement of a vowel doesnt make it a vowel itself

Personally my favorite is my name Gwyn.. shortened from Gwyneth which is Welsh.

STUPID, comes to my mind. Y is the vowel. Sometimes y means y is the vowel in words such as...Cry, try, myth, brr, lynx, sty, fry, dry, and sky. ADAH!

BY, CRY, DRY, FLY, FRY, BYRD, GYPSY, GYVE, HYMN, LYMPH, LYNCH, NYMPH,
LYNX, MYTH, MY, PLY, PYGMY, PYX, RHYTHM, SHY, SHYLY, SKY, SPRY, SPY, STY,
STYX, SYLPH, TRY, TRYST, WRY

theres only about 117 words in the dictionary that have no vowels

y is a vowel! y only isn't a vowel when it sounds like "yell" or "yes"...the "yuh" sound

Y is not a vowel.

What people consider a word varies greatly depending on what lame dictionary you are looking at.

Welsh is another language and in that language w is another vowel sometimes, much like y is in English. (So cwm is a WELSH word.) Setting that aside for a moment: brr, psst, shh, hmm, mmm, and mm-hmm are all words. It's called an onomatopoeia - a word that stands in for a sound.

I believe nth (as in, "to the nth power") is a word, and it doesn't even have a y. :)

The word "nth" is in the dictionary

I'm confused is Y a vowel or not?

You guys seriously never heard the "sometimes Y" statement? Yes Y is a vowel...sometimes.

Rhythm is the longest word without a vowel.

on the other hand in the word "young" y acts as a constanant bc it is next to vowels and makes the "yuh" sound. when y makes this sound, it is a constanent

Y is a vowel, The word in the dictionary with no vowel is - shh

tsk, tsk, tsk. Y is a vowel in ALL those words that she gave you!

cwm is a term mountaineers use to describe a particular geological feature, a kind of a valley, but I think it originates from another language, but we use it in english because we do not have another word for that.

Interjections:
pfft
sh (or shh). Origin: 1847.
psst (or pst.). Origin: 1870–75
hmm
tsk (or tsktsk). verb, noun, or interjection, depending on context.

If people want to exclude interjections (for some reason):
nth. adjective or idiom, depending on context. Origin: 1850-5

So, there you go. :)

Y is a vowel when it is said as a vowel. lets take the word "gypsy". In this case y is used as a vowel because there are no other vowels and the sound that it makes when pronounced. the first y sounds like and "I" and the second y is a long y sound "eeeee".

For all you dummies.....Y is a VOWEL so STOP posting words that have a y in them. Did yall ever learn anything at elementary school???? ...Rhythm has the letter y in it so the word doesn't count. Come on now!!!!!

Dan, STFU. Obviously those who think "y" is a vowel (WHICH IS IT) are not european. The best answers I've seen was "psst" and "nth" and guess what, THEY DON'T HAVE "Y" in it. :-p

You can find a nice PDF file of "no vowel" words that can be used in the game of Scrabble here:

http://www.scrabblejunction.org/Lists/ALL_CONS.pdf

im in 6th grade and our teacher STILL says a,e,i,o,u and sometimes y!! y is DEFINITELY a vowel

Y is a vowel sometimes like in the word "sky". It's not a vowel when it's in a word like "Boy".

Some words without a vowel, which are official scrabble words are:

cwm, brr, brrr, psst, mm, hm, hmm, sh, shh

@Dan, If you are an "A" grade English student, then why do you not know how to use Capital letters when they are called for. American and UK do not speak the exact same way. The argument should be, why don't people use proper grammar when they type on line. Hell I was "C" student and I try to.

Y is considered a "sometimes" vowel. Technically there are no words without vowels, but if you don't believe that y is a vowel, than the above list is accurate.

All tha tI have to say is that this went to the nth degree!!!!!!!!!!!!1

to all of our uneducated people out there. Here is the answer: "Y" is a vowel when there are no other vowels present. As for psst, it is not a word, but a noise. it has no definition, etc.
THE ONLY WORD IN THE ENGLISH LANGUAGE WITHOUT A VOWEL IS: "NTH"

What about the word PSST. I fairly sure it is some Harvard dictionary. Someone should check me on this. I am pretty sure though!

A few have been mentioned, but of those they are usually onamatapia. The only true word I know of is "nth" as in to the nth degree. That is a real word, has a true defination and is in the dictionary. It is a great save in scrabble!

nth is an english word and is the ONLY word with no vowels!! To the nth degree. It is in any good dictionary.

If you do not include slang or abbreviations, (a good dictionary will include these but will state in the introduction that they are not proper english), then there is not any word in the "queen's english" that does not contain a vowel. Y is only a vowel sometimes, but always when it stands alone.

according to wikipedia, "a vowel is a sound in spoken language...pronounced with an open vocal tract so that there is no build-up of air pressure at any point above the glottis" Y is a letter, it is a symbolic representation of a *sound.* Ergo, all words have vowel *sounds,* some symbolized by Y.

The longest one I can think of is "RYTHM"

Zzyzx, California. Also a road off Interstate 15 which leads to the town of Zzyzx, California called Zzyzx Road.

This is an interesting conversation. My first name is VYVRY (like Vievree) and has always stumped people. I have been defending my Ys as vowels for 36 years. Check out the book Jubilee for the origin of my name; it's spelled slightly different.

Y can sometimes be a vowel. In cases like yes, you, or yesterday, they are consonants. But in words like type, my, sky, they are vowels. So every word that they listed is incorrect.

Y is a vowel, but there is one word in English with no vowel: nth. It is defined as a mathematical adjective that denotes an undefined member of a series of numbers or enumerated items. Ex: For the nth time that day they were forced to relate the whole story.

When I was in public school in the '50s, we were taught that the vowels were: "A E I O U and sometimes Y and W."

Nth answer is from www.dictionary.com

There is one word that has no vowels and does not have theb Y in it. The word is "nth" and is a great scabble word. It is a unit of measurement (to the nth degree)

crwth is a musical instrument and it has no vowles in it

sometimes w? I've never heard of that one before. =)

crwth. it's an instrument.

How about Mr. and Mrs?

In the 1950's in Catholic school we were taught that vowels are AEIOU and sometimes Y as in words like why cry shy fly.

Ok. For all of you out there out there is only 1 (one) English word out there that does NOT contain any vowels A E I O U or the letter Y, and you can look it up in any dictionary. NTH as in "To the nth degree"

Way to go Silver and Kyle for knowing the answer.

Shy gypsy, slyly spryly tryst by my crypt.

intelligence is a very attractive trait in a woman

The longest one I can think of is "RYTHM"

Nth
–adjective
1. being the last in a series of infinitely decreasing or increasing values, amounts, etc.
2. (of an item in a series of occurrences, planned events, things used, etc., that is thought of as being infinitely large) being the latest, or most recent: This is the nth time I've told you

people say words like shy & try....remember y is also a vowel...try to come up with words withOUT A, E, I, O, U and Y

hey, some said,, PSST HAS NO DEFiNiTiON, but he defined it as A NOiSE.
HOW SMART =))
wahahahahhaahaahha!

y is considered a vowel. thats why people say A E I O U and Y because we say it is a vowel!

the only word n the english language that doesnt have a vowel in it is nth, "to the nth degree"

oh and dan, ask anyone, go search it on google, do anything. Y IS A VOWEL!! I DON"Y KNOW WHAT THEY TEACH IN THOSE DUMB ENGLISH SCHOOLS BUT HERE IS USA Y IS SOMETIMES A VOWEL!!

there's no way you people can be this stupid... y is sometimes a vowel, and in every answer listed... THAT IS THE CASE!

y is a vowel in these words people.

sorry y is a vowel.

Nth.... is the ONLY word with no vowels.. its meaning is the smallest part or increment of a number... or somethign like that!

Crwth - large gathering of people

Guys, they teach you in kindergarten that y is a vowel when it's at the END OF A WORD. Therefore "cry" contains a vowel.

I was shocked not to see 'crwth', which is a Welsh harp.

Y is not a vowel. My, my, my what are we either teaching our people and why is that we as a learned people want to interject our own beliefs into fact. Let's just go with the facts. AEIOU.

I saw this question several years ago, but the question also excluded the letter "y" as well. I wound up consulting the Oxford English Dictionary, and found the word "crwth". I hve yet o see it anywhere in this list.

I BELIEVE THAT ALL WORDS HAVE VOWELS INCLUDING WORDS WITH THE LETTER Y IN IT. WORDS WITHOUT A,E,I,O,U USE Y AS THERE VOWEL THATS WHYY THEY SAY A,E,I,O,U AND SOMETIMES Y.VOWELS MAKE THE SOUND IN A WORD ONOMATOPOEIA'S INCLUDING THE WORDS SHH, MMM, PSST ARE USED TO SHOW SOUNDS

A E I O U and sometimes Y

Did any one put "sh".? it too is a word! thank you.

WHY is another word that everyone uses and I havent seen anyone post it!! :)

wow, sometimes ignorance is over welming. first off, y is a vowel. lol, go back to kindergarden where they teach you tha jiggle, "a e i o u, and sometimes y!"; sound and gestures, such as hmm, are not words anyways. good god!

no comment of some of the posts on this response

continued from last answer. IF U THINK ABOUT IT NO ONE WOULD USE THOSE WORD IN A ESSAY UNLESS THEY WERE WRITING ABOUT ONOMATOPOEIA'S.

**Here is the best Answer**

In the New International Version of the Holy Bible, in regard to to the divine name YHWH; commonly refferred to as the Tetragrammaton, in most English versions the name YHWH was replaced with the word LORD; not to confused with Adonai which was later replaced with Lord.

"nth" is a word with no vowels (and no Y's). "Technically" a "Y" is a vowel in most of the instances listed above. I think I saw "psst" listed as well (another good one).

Ladies and Gentlemen. Currently I'm in a Literacy Development course at my university and guess what? If a word ends in Y or W (Yes, W) then that letter is then considered a vowel! Learn how your language works before putting out your ideas out there for others to mock you by.

I thought y was a vowel...

FOR THE PEOPLE WHO SAY THAT THERE ISN'T ANY Y AS A VOWEL AND THAT PEOPLE ARE RETARTED YOU MIGHT WANT TO CHECK YOURSELFS, IF YOU WERE CLEARLY EDUCATED YOU KNOW THAT Y IS SOMETIMES A VOWEL!!! KEYWORD SOMETIMES SO MAYBE ITS NOT A VOWEL IN ONE PARTICULAR WORD GUYS,SOMETIMES!MAYBE, MAYBE NOT YOU DONT NO!

Excluding abbreviations, ALL vowels (a, e, i, o, u, y, w), interjections, roman numerals, and slang, nth is the only word without a vowel. Y and w are considered approximants.
